Talk:Climate emergency declarations in the United Kingdom

Incomplete Page edit

This page needs more information it is so far incomplete particularly in regards to local government in England Greenie2020 (talk) 02:57, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

I have the completed London Boroughs and District Councils section and will continue to work through more sections in the coming weeks. To save time I believe that we can source the data of who has declared an emergency through CEDAMIA and just use the citation that links to their page. That way its simpler to discover which jurisdictions have not or are yet to declare a climate emergency. I could use advice as to how to reference this Greenie2020 (talk) 22:13, 6 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

All data boxes have been filled. Now its time to work on commentary and referencing. Help is welcome. Greenie2020 (talk) 12:18, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Several Proposals edit

Firstly, this article should be moved from Climate Emergency in the United Kingdom to Climate emergency declarations in the United Kingdom; In addition to fixing the improper capitalization of "emergency", it also is more accurate, as this page is concerned with declarations of climate emergencies, not the existence of a climate emergency itself.

Secondly, I believe only jurisdictions which have introduced or passed a bill should be included; there is no reason to include every city and county council that has taken and will take no action to pass such a bill, and simply serves to add clutter to the article.

Thirdly, with the second change made, the tables should be significantly modified; first, "Declared a Climate Emergency" should be changed to "Status", perhaps with options to the effect of "Introduced", "Tabled", "Failed", "Passed", and "Declared" (For those that declare without passing a bill). Secondly, and less importantly, I believe the tables should be separated by those that have already made declarations, those that have ongoing efforts to make declarations, and those that have had attempts at declaration failed. A description column should also be added to the tables that are of in progress or failed attempts, though not to completed declarations. The date column should also be re-labeled, perhaps to "Date Declared" in the finished column, "Date Introduced" in the in progress section, and most likely removed altogether from the failed column.

Fourth, I'm not sure if including a picture of a Climate Extinction rally is relevant here, but if it is to be included, the caption needs to be cleaned up significantly.

Fifth and finally, there are significant sections of the article which have not been filled out; these would likely have to be removed and re-added per change two if they are found to have attempted or made a declaration.

There is likely other issues with this article, which I encourage to be raised in this thread, as well as any suggestions for alternate paths for getting the article up to standard. Builder018 (talk) 20:18, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

I have also made significant copy-edit changes to the lead and National sections, though I don't believe the copy edit header should be removed yet, as there is likely still issues that require fixing. I've also added this article to Wikiprojects Climate Change and United Kingdom. Furthermore, basically all of the exact same changes need to be made to Climate Emergency in Australia, which is in a similarly unsatisfactory state, and in addition hasn't yet been copy-edited as I did to this article. @Builder018: Hi! First of all, thank you very much for your work and opinions!
1) I have moved the page.
2) I agree with you: only jurisdictions which have introduced or passed a bill should be included. What do you think @Greenie2020:?
3) agree with all
4) about the "picture of a Climate Extinction rally" I put that mainly to have a picture on the article... If we achieve a map it would be better... Maybe if there was a "history" section...

@Javiermes:
1. I agree with moving it.
2. I disagree that jurisdictions which have not introduced or passed an emergency being included. I believe that the lack of a declaration is important to note. This is actully the reason I created the page so that I could understand the spread of jurisdictions that had not declared a climate emergency. This is information that is not recorded anywhere else on the internet.
3. I agree with the first point of changing the name of that column. I disagree that the tables should be separated in that way. I do think they should be sortable by whether they have declared or not but not in separate tables I feel regional stratification makes more sense as it shows the geographic spread and differences in the movement.
4. Yes I agree the picture would ideally be a map.
5. That took me forever to do and I have gradually been adding to it over weeks (I work full time) so any extra hands are welcome it will take me awhile. Greenie2020 (talk) 11:50, 12 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Greenie2020:
If you're editing based off of a personal desire to be able to keep track of something, it's likely your edits would fall under Wikipedia:Ownership of content, which I'd recommend avoiding. Whether or not it's kept track of elsewhere is irrelevant to that fact. As far as the notes about a lack of declaration, if this were a list of countries then perhaps, but there are simply way too many local councils that have made and will make no efforts whatsoever to make a declaration, and it makes no sense for these to be included. As for your third point, it would be possible to separate it both by region and by status; it doesn't necessarily have to be one or the other. As far as the inclusion of blank spaces that are still being worked on, you should add the rows as you work on it, instead of leaving them blank on the article, as this is improper and could confuse people trying to use the article before it's completed. @Builder018: Its not my personal desire, climate emergency is an issue facing the planet currently. It is an incredibly important political movement to record, as important as pages that keep track of political movements such as samesex marriage. The UK has made an enormous amount of local declarations more than any country in fact. The fact that councils have not recorded a climate emergency is just as important as those that haven't, it's important to note the geographic spread of the political movement. It already took me hours to put them there and I am continuing to work on them. If you would like to contribute your time you are very much welcome.
