What is type of company/organization is chessgames.com? For-profit? Non-profit organization? Something else? Peter Ballard (talk) 00:51, 5 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Separate page for each game edit

As for now, the following can be read under section "Database": "Each game on ChessGames.com is hosted on a separate web page to allow internal and external weblinks to that particular game."

Although I understand the idea and I can see how someone could be led to believe this, this is actually false. This is called server-side scripting. Basically, there is only one page -- index.pl under /perl/chessgame/ -- which requires a game ID as an argument that is relayed to the web server, interpreted by the perl interpreter, and rendered properly when ready to be sent to the user.

Ultimately, this means that there is only one page, and that this page is rendered differently every time an argument (a game ID in this case) is given.

What is true about this, though, is that along with every game in their database there is a table or a different database altogether that is used to properly stock kibitzes (and whatever needs to be stocked and that is specific for each game).

So basically here's how it goes: on the server, there is a database, which contains 1) the games, and 2) the kibitzes for each game. When a request is sent to the web server, the server fetches the right game along with its kibitzes, renders the webpage properly using the perl interpreter, and sends it back to the HTTP server, which is then viewed by the user "as is".

Thus, only one page for all games.

References edit

This article thoroughly deserves deletion. I cannot see a single reference to an independent reliable source. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 21:55, 1 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

The reftag in the heading is inaccurate; there are indeed sources, but as stated, none of them independent of the site itself. Hushpuckena (talk) 04:29, 7 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
The article was the subject of an AFD in April 2015. I agree it has no secondary sources worthy of the name but it had 3 votes for retention including mine -based on wp:IAR -on the grounds that we need a description of a website used as a reference in hundreds of chess articles on Wikipedia. I don't expect the secondary reference situation to improve but the site's real significance is the large database of master games which can be independently verified albeit with difficulty from a few thousand books. In short, the encyclopedia would be poorer without it. JRPG (talk) 15:20, 24 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
The chesscafe article I linked to is at least a secondary reliable source, even if the coverage was negative. MaxBrowne (talk) 10:21, 25 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

External links modified edit

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Chessgames.com. Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:

Browser search for chessgames.com now goes to chess.com edit

Chess.com may have acquired chessgames.com and shut it down, very recently. Chess.com database of master games interface is not as user friendly. Mark Schaeffer (talk) 19:30, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

I was able to reach chessgames.com indirectly, via a link in Barden's chess column in the Guardian, so this may be a browser issue, or maybe some kind of malicious hack. Mark Schaeffer (talk) 19:47, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
