Gallican church? edit
According to the article
However, in September 1563, on a visit to Rome, the cardinal... professed opinions less decided Gallican. Moreover, when he learned that the French ambassadors... were dissatisfied because the legates had obtained from the council approval of a project for the "reformation of the princes", which the latter deemed contrary to the liberties of the Gallican church...
But the Gallican church was established only in 1682, more than a hundred years later!

Reformation of the princes? edit
According to the article
...Moreover, when he [Charles] learned that the French ambassadors... were dissatisfied because the legates had obtained from the council approval of a project for the "reformation of the princes", which the latter deemed contrary to the liberties of the Gallican church, he endeavoured, though without success, to bring about the return of the ambassadors, prevailed on the legates to withdraw the objectionable articles and strove to secure the immediate publication in France of the decrees of the council; this, however, was refused by Catherine de' Medici.
Very unclear. What was the "reformation of the princes"? Which legates are mentioned here? What was the importance of the publication?

Outcry of derision? edit
According to the article
When in 1566 François de Montmorency, royal governor of Paris and his personal enemy, attempted to prevent the cardinal from entering the capital with an armed escort, the ensuing conflict and the precipitate flight of the cardinal gave rise to an outcry of derision which obliged him [Charles] to retire to his diocese for two years.
Whose "outcry of derision"? How did it oblige him to retire to his diocese?

Prevented marriage? edit
According to the article
...in 1574 he [Charles] vexed the king still more when, through spite, he prevented the marriage of this princess with the king of Portugal.
How did he prevent the marriage? Why did he do it? Is the king of Portugal mentioned Sebastian I?

Sourcing Issues edit
As of this date, the article is pretty much a straight copy and paste from the 1913 edition of the Catholic Encyclopedia. This is not a copyright issue since the source is within the public domain, but it does raise some red flags. First there is only the one source. Secondly the source was published by a body that the subject of the article was affiliated with, which raises questions involving balance and neutrality. And third, the sole source is over 100 years old, which at the very least raises questions about how dated the research and information is. -Ad Orientem (talk) 00:37, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
- An additional concern is that there seems to be an assumption in the article that the reader has a certain familiarity with a lot of the terms, and subjects that are touched on. The online version of the Catholic Encyclopedia from which this article is a more or less word for word copy, contains a large number of internal links that would probably help a reader, but which we can't really migrate over to here. -Ad Orientem (talk) 03:52, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
