Talk:Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster

Latest comment: 1 year ago by GHColley

RE "and is answerable to Parliament for the governance of the Duchy.[6]" This statement is partly contradicted by the webpage of the Duchy of Lancaster, which states "The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster is responsible to the Sovereign for the administration of the Duchy" in one instance, and in another "The Chancellor is accountable to the Sovereign personally, rather than to Parliament, for the Duchy’s affairs, and receives and surrenders the seals of office separately from other Cabinet colleagues. However, the Chancellor does answer Parliamentary Questions on matters relating to his Duchy responsibilities." See https://www.duchyoflancaster.com/about-the-duchy/our-people/chancellor-of-the-duchy-of-lancaster/ - which is also the correct citation. Recommended change: "and is accountable to the Sovereign personally, rather than to Parliament, for the Duchy's affairs." GHColley (talk) 01:49, 11 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

"Since 1491 there has been a Vice Chancellor. He is now the Chancery Division Judge in the north-west, and no longer appointed to that position as legal officer of the Duchy."

Could this be cleared up please? The wording is a bit, well, un-clear to me. Thanks. David 21:50, 14 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I am the Publisher of Burke's Peerage & Landed Gentry and in July this year we are publishing the 4th Volume of the 19th Edition of Landed Gentry ... that INCLUDES The Duchy of Lancaster.

I can see it has had more than a few Chancellors including Sir Oswald Moseley in his time ... is there anyone who can write an authoritative article of some 1500 words on the Duchy for the forthcoming book? It is need of course very soon ...

Duchy/County Palatinate edit

There is a widespread misapprehension that the Duchy of Lancaster and the County Palatinate are the same thing. They are not:

  • The Duchy had (indeed has) land in many counties. A County Palatinate is a county exempt in some way from the normal adminstrative systems. Lancashire was such a county, and the jurisdiction belonged to the Duke as its earl. This exemption is long since defunct, so that the word "former" just removed was correct. However the wording implying that the Suchy was the county is wrong. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:09, 24 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Official title edit

In the German articel de:Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (CDL) it is said, that the Chancellor's only duty is to appoint Clerks of the Peace. Here this duty isn't mentioned at all (or am I overseeing something?). So first question, is the description (and especially the official title) mentionend in the German Wikipedia correct? Second question, is it correct, that the Lord Chancellor appoints most of the British judges (including the clerks of peace) all over Britain, but not in the Duchy of Lancaster (where they are appointed by the CDL?
