Flags edit

Could I just ask why Scottish drivers get to display the Scottish flag in the rankings but English born drivers are labelled with the Union Jack. I think this is grossly unfair, where is the St. George's Cross for England please? --86.130.30.88 22:20, 19 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

This question comes up all the time. There was a discussion at 2006 Formula One season not so long ago. The FIA seem to work at the level of the UK, not the individual elements, as do the Olympics, so they should all have the UK flag. I'll correct them. 4u1e 23:00, 4 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Austrian flag is broken. The icon graphic is attempting to link to: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/41/Flag_of_Austria.svg/22px-Flag_of_Austria.svg.png 91.84.28.61 (talk) 17:33, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Seems to be working OK now. DH85868993 (talk) 01:34, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Donington Park edit

I added Donington Park into the infobox due to recent confirmation that it will host the GP from 2010 onwards. If there is any issue with it being included in the infobox please discuss. TestUser001 (talk) 11:59, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ferrari's wins edit

I notice recently Ferrari has been demoted from 15 BGP wins to 14, presumably because of the Lancia D50 chassis the team used to win the 1956 Grand Prix. One of the problems with the 'Constructor' nomenclature is that it creates this little inconsistencies. The Ferrari team has won 15 British Grands Prix, but can't claim it in the infobox now? Comments before an edit war ensues? --Falcadore (talk) 00:35, 30 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that too. I support the listing of constructors rather than teams in the infobox (I think listing teams would cause us more grief); I think the issue here is whether the car Fangio was driving was a "Ferrari" or a "Lancia-Ferrari". We currently have some inconsistency on this issue: 1956 British Grand Prix and Ferrari Grand Prix results call it a "Ferrari" (as do FORIX, ChicaneF1 and www.formula1.com) whereas this article and Juan Manuel Fangio call it a "Lancia-Ferrari". Brooklands Track Map edit

The track map used in this article for Brooklands is not the same as the layout actually used for the British Grand Prix, so I feel it needs to be replaced, or at least removed if no other images are available. It is inappropriate for the same reasons as why the current Brands Hatch layout is not used, for example. I am going to remove the image from the 1926 and 1927 articles, as given that this was discussed briefly in Talk:1926 British Grand Prix nearly 7 years ago I think having the incorrect image there discourages someone from making a correct map (something I don't have the know-how to do myself). Since there has been no other comments either way, I've removed the incorrect Brookslands image.A7V2 (talk) 11:00, 27 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Official Race Names edit

Doug Nye's book "The British Grand Prix 1926-1976" (published 1977) mentions in the introduction that the British Grand Prix's history can be considered to have ended in 1971, since from 1972 the race was know as the "John Player Grand Prix". Now of course this is no-longer the case, but I'm quite suspicious of some of the "official name"s given in a few articles. Of course the headings should still be "197x British Grand Prix", but I wonder how the "official" names were chosen for 1972-1976? Nye is very clear that from 1972-1974 at least, the race was known as the "John Player Grand Prix", with "British" removed entirely, and doesn't mention it again for '75 or '76, but surely at the very least the official name for '75 would have included "John Player"? I can't find much out, but this poster https://www.internationalposter.com/product/john-player-grand-prix--silverstone-july-14th/?i=86&&k=Motor&&sw=&bw=&sh=&bh=&m=in&s=&o=0 certainly suggests the name did NOT include the word "British" in at least 1973. You're right. Looking at the official programmes from 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1976 those races' name was John Player Grand Prix. The 1977 and 1978 races were named "John Player British Grand Prix". Given the approach we have taken with regards to the names of the Grands Prix held in the US, I feel we have no option but to rename the articles on the 1972-1978 races held in the UK.Tvx1 02:35, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Might want to point out WP:COMMONNAME at this point as those John Player Grands Prix have pretty much unanimously been refered to as British Grands Prix by everyone pretty much from the moment John Player & Sons ceased their financial backing of the race. That's over 40 years of being refered to as the British Grand Prix and without any form of correction from official bodies. --Falcadore (talk) 02:42, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
I certainly don't think the article names should be changed, as Doug Nye mentions in his book (and as you can see if you look at old news articles) pretty much everyone called them "British Grand Prix", but I still think the "official name" section of the articles should reflect reality. A7V2 (talk) 03:49, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
(edit) I've changed the names for 1972-1976, and also 1971 (The Woolmark British Grand Prix) and 1977 (John Player British Grand Prix). It looks like most of the ones after that already have the correct names (well up to about 1983 anyway). A7V2 (talk) 04:16, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
However, we should also practice what we preach. We cannot justify rigorously sticking to Ceasars Palace Grand Prix while dismissing John Player Grand Prix. There are also plenty of sources for Las Vegas Grand Prix for the former.Tvx1 18:29, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
I don't know, given that the arrangement didn't last long, and was mostly ignored, I can't see how "British Grand Prix" wouldn't be the common name. In line with WP:OFFICIAL, I've made sure the official name is at the very start of each of the 1972-76 articles, and also I created redirects from [197x John Player Grand Prix] although I don't know how useful that will be... Maybe a note could be added to this article as well? A7V2 (talk) 00:00, 29 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

1949 Silverstone Track Map edit

The track map for 1949 was also incorrect, as it doesn't show the chicane at club. This isn't as bad as the Brooklands map, but for the moment I've removed it from 1949 British Grand Prix as it is incorrect, but as I mentioned with regard to the Brooklands map, I don't have the know-how to make a better one myself. Ferrari Dave says this is wrong edit

Ferrari Dave from the Queens Head Pub in Meriden says this race was also held at Donnington! 81.86.86.242 (talk) 12:27, 17 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Several grands prix have been held at Donington (pre-WW2 "Donington Grand Prix" and in 1993 the European Grand Prix), but never the British Grand Prix JamesHT1967 (talk) 18:14, 17 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
