Latvian sources and the Helēna Faulbaums

Background

According to this article in the Oban Times "Luing recalls tragedy that claimed sailors" a spokesperson for the Luing History Group stated that only Captain Cughauss's body was repatriated to Latvia. However, the following Latvian language article provides considerable detail which contradicts this statment: "Šodien gulda Skotijas zemē 7 latvju jūrniekus".

No atrastajiem katastrofas upuriem Skotijas smiltīs guldīs tikai 7: radiotelegrafistu Šulcu, mechaniķi Eduardu Lapovicu un kurinātāju Fēliksu Novicki un matrožus: Aleksandru Meijeri, Marģeru Bankovu, Kārli Šnīderu un Rīzi. Cughausa līķi, ievērojot viņa brāļa vēlēšanos, pārvedīs uz Latviju. [...]
   Šķirsti vienkārši, bet skaisti, pārklāti ar Latvijas karogu. Latviešu jūrniekiem veltīti veseli 12 vaiņagi. Krāšņākais no sūtniecības, ar svaigiem ziediem un mūsu nacionālām krāsām. Saliņas kapsēta, kurā guldīs mirušos latviešu jūrniekus, ir skaistā, klusā vietā. Visapkārt tai jūra. Paredzēts traģiskā nāvē bojā gājušiem latviešu jūrniekiem celt arī pieminekli. Bēru ceremonijā kā Latvijas pārstāvis piedalīsies konsuls Maršals. Bez viņa būs klāt arī divi izglābušies latviešu jūrnieki un daudz vietējo iedzīvotāju. Pie kapa paredzēts īss dievkalpojums. Tad šķirstus, segtus ar Latvijas karogu, guldīs skotu smiltīs. Tanī pašā laikā saliņai garām brauks Latvijas tvaikonis «Amata» uz Bleitas ostu, kur uzņems Cughausa līķi, no gādāšanai uz dzimteni (Sākumā bija domāts to uzņemt Obanas ostā, kur līķis pašlaik atrodas, bet pēdējā acumirkli nolemts to uzņemt Bleitā. Tāpēc šķirstu novedīs pa dzelzceļu uz Bleitu). Šķirsts jau slēgts, arī uz tā Latvijas karogs un daudz ziedu. Izvadīšanas ceremonijā otrdien, paredzams, sapulcēsies daudz vietējo iedzīvotāju. Kā tagad noskaidrots, uz nogrimušā kuģa «Helēna Faulbaums» sākumā bijuši 20 jūrnieku. Tā kā bojā aizgājuši 15 un izglābušies 4, tad vēl iztrūka viena. Tagad izrādās, ka tas bijis matrozis Bauers, kas atstājis kuģi pirms tā aiziešanas no Liverpūles un tādā kārtā palicis dzīvs.

"Today 7 Latvian sailors are buried on Scottish soil".

(By telephone from our correspondent in London.) London, November 2nd.

The funeral for the Latvian sailors, who tragically perished, will start today at 12:00 on the quiet islet of Cullipool ["Kulipulu"]. Only 7 of the discovered victims of the catastrophe will be buried in the Scottish sands: radiotelegrapher Šulcs, mechanic Eduards Lapovics, stoker Fēlikss Novickis and sailors [matroži, also Seamen]: Aleksandrs Meijers [Meijeris?], Marģers Bankovs, Kārlis Šnīders and Rīze [a surname]. The body of Cughauss will be repatriated to Latvia as per the wishes of his brother. [...]

The coffins are simple yet beautiful and draped in Latvian flags. 12 wreaths have been dedicated to the Latvian sailors. The most opulent one - from the [Latvian] embassy, with fresh flowers and our national colors. The cemetery of the islet, where the dead Latvian sailors will be buried, is located in a magnificent and tranquil place. It's surrounded by the sea. It's also planned to build a monument to the sailors. The Latvian representative at the funeral ceremony will be Consul [in Glasgow] Marshall. Also, two of the rescued Latvian sailors and many local inhabitants will be besides him. A small service is planned at the grave. After that, the coffins, draped in Latvian flags, will be laid to rest in the Scottish sand. At the same time the islet will be passed by the Latvian steamer Amata on route to Port Blythe [Bleita] where the body of Cughauss will be loaded on the ship for repatriation to his homeland. (Initially it was planned to load it at Port Oban, where it lays now, but at the last minute it was decided to load it in Blythe, to which it will be brought by train). The casket has already been closed, it's been draped with the Latvian flag and many flowers. It is likely that many locals will gather at the farewell ceremony on Tuesday. As it has been discovered, initially there were 20 sailors on the Helēna Faulbaums. As 15 perished and 4 were saved, one was still missing. Now it has turned out that it was Seaman Bauers, who had stayed alive by leaving the ship before its departure from Liverpool.
