Foote vs Grant edit

When I updated this page with more detail, I included Grant as the primary commander. Although this battle is considered a naval battle, until October 1862 the river gunboats were owned and manned by the War Dept; only the officers were from the Navy. Grant, as the District [of Cairo] commander, was the operational owner of the campaign. Hal Jespersen 16:16, 30 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

edits May 16 edit

I deleted the uncited information added on May 16 regarding the neutrality of Kentucky. The footnotes for this paragraph cite references that indicate the first violation of neutrality was the seizure of Columbus. All Civil War references with which I am familiar make the same point. If you have a secondary source that claims the contrary, you can add it, but not without adjusting the footnotes for the paragraph. Hal Jespersen (talk) 01:14, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fugitive Slave Law

1. What do these posters tell you about Northerners' and Southerners' different reactions to the Fugitive Slave Law?

Answer: The North people dint really say blacks or Negros. The south has a reward. That south is arguing that it is argung Dred Scott Case

What does this quote tell you about Northerners' reactions to the Dred Scott case?

Abraham Lincoln: "Put this and that together, and we have another nice little niche, which we may, ere long, see filled with another Supreme Court decision, declaring that the Constitution of the United States does not permit a State to exclude slavery from its limits. . . . We shall lie down pleasantly dreaming that the people of Missouri are on the verge of making their State free, and we shall awake to the reality instead, that the Supreme Court has made Illinois a slave State."

Answer: he saying that it is like going asleep and think the next day that there will be freedom. But it did not go that way the next day.

2. What does this quote tell you about Southerners' reactions to the Dred Scott case?

Richmond Enquirer, March, 1857:

"And, now, that the Supreme Court of the United States -- the interpreter of the Constitution-- after ... research, thorough investigation of facts and analysis of principle, after deep deliberation, ... has declared a calm conviction, sustained with ... reasoning, which not only annihilates ... but also destroys the foundation of the theory upon which [the North's] warfare has been waged against the institutions of the South, they are completely taken aback ... bewildered, confounded and confused."

"The decision in the Dred Scott case must be a finality, so far as the federal legislation on the institution of slavery is concerned. The fact has gone forth, the Constitution has been construed, and Congress must conform."

Answer: there saying that the other branches of government, just need to agree. The congress can no longer make laws because the supremcourt made a dicision. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bobman124 (talkcontribs) 13:59, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
