Add a Link? edit

Does anyone think that we should a link to the following page? [http://earlyhistory.googlepages.com/historyoftheearlyhaybaler History of the Baler] - Please give your reasons as to why or why not! Thanks! West wikipedia

Because it does not cite it's sources, doesn't add anything already in Wikipedia, the site is non-notable i.e. it hasn't been cited as an authority by other reliable sources and it's authors are completely unknown. In fact if I google for earlyhistory googlepages com I get nothing. Please read WP:WEB (under criteria), WP:RS (e.g. Non-scholarly sources) and WP:NOTABLE and ideally please solve this one link first before you start posting to all the other entries you've been trying to make. Picture edit

Is it me or does anyone else find the round baler annoying and distracting. I don't want to move it because it is related to the article, but its jumpy and gives me a headache when trying to read the article, anyone else have simmilar problems?

Somebody might want to film a rould baler with a steadycam and eventually a longer sequence, like 15-20 secs before repeating. Alternatively a still picture and pic-text linking to a page / article with the baler in action.
Unfortunately there are not that many balers in Copenhagen, and I'm not planning on going to my parents country-side house again the next 4-5 months. Besides I don't have a videocam :-( G®iffen 12:08, 19 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
It appears the movie OGG format is nearing standardization, so that should be converted to an OGG movie. Those remain motionless until the viewer directly clicks the play button. This would reduce the page download time for people (still) on dialup internet connections since that GIF is around 800 kb. DMahalko (talk) 20:57, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

That round baler animation is probably the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life. When I saw it, I could not stop laughing for at least two minutes. I don't know why. - BeesAreFuzzy

Because it looks like Pac Man vomiting up a very large hairball? DMahalko (talk) 20:57, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Baling history/usage in another article? edit

Should baling history and methods perhaps go under another topic heading?

There are a number of existing related topics, where it could fit, such as hay and straw.

I could make a new "baling" article but as the bale disambiguation page shows, many other materials are also baled so there would need to be a way to distinguish this farm-baling topic from other types of baling.

Ogg Video examples? edit

As an experiment I've added a 320x240 video of wrapping high-moisture round bales. I am not sure how well this is going to work.

Wikipedia sort of supports inclusion of video into articles. The videos must use the obscure but free Ogg video format which is not well supported and may just happen to crash your browser due to the lousy codec support right now. Also the file upload size is limited to 20 megabytes which prevents lengthy videos.

I would appreciate commentary on the success or failure to play that video. In the youtube era, educational video clips like this could help to improve Wikipedia content.

It's a little choppy with IE 7.0, and less choppy with Firefox 3.0 (I viewed them side-by-side). Other than that, it's fine, at least to me!

16-inch diameter bale edit

I have a hard time believing that early round bales were 16 inches in diameter and 48 inches wide -- that would be a floppy, sausage-shaped bale. I checked to see whether the "16" was a result of vandalism, but the same figure has been in the article since that sentence was added in 2006. Can anyone corroborate or refute this figure? This YouTube video of the "Roto Baler" does, indeed, show a small bale being produced. Using the men and equipment as reference points, the bale could very well be about 16" in diameter (about the same width as a thin man's chest) and about 4' wide!

Round Baler: two-and-a-half issues edit

1) "...bale is wrapped around the outside but not knotted."

Other than the alliterative, homonymous, and hackneyed use of "not knotted", which implies that some sort of string is used, it begs the following questions: "Why isn't it knotted? How does it stay wrapped if it isn't knotted? Why doesn't it fall apart?"

All large (and indeed small) round bales I've seen are wrapped with fine netting. This is wrapped round twice or more, and the threads have catchy edges which snag on the previous layer and stay in place securely, with a sort of "gentle velcro" effect – you can unroll it, but it will not come undone on its own. If we make big bales this year (which depends on the weather) I'll try to take some pictures. Richard New Forest (talk) 17:31, 26 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

2) "...it will also be wrapped in an airtight plastic sheeting by a subsequent machine."

Name the machine!

Bill Harshaw (talk) 18:45, 11 October 2015 (UTC)== Safety issues with large round bales ==Reply

Have added the news regading fatal accident in the UK involving Mike Edwards [1]. The news item may need to be trimmed or later removed if it is seen as recentism. But the incident has brought to the fore questions regading the safety of large round bales in areas of sloping land. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:29, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

This section has no sources. The descriptions are at variance with my memories. The first two paragraphs describe the hay fork system used for loose hay (http://www.farmcollector.com/farm-life/hay-fork-carriers.aspx?PageId=2#ArticleContent) which might have been used for bales but would have been so inefficient I doubt it was much used. I'm not familiar with the two elevator system described in the rest of the section, we just used one elevator with a man at each end.--Bill Harshaw (talk) 18:46, 11 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
