Talk:Assyrian statue (BM 124963)

Better title

When I discussed this statue with historians last year, the term used has been the Assyrian "Titillation statue", however this seems controversial in the sources I have found to date, which call this a variety of names along the lines of Assyrian statue, using the BM number or nude female Assyrian statue. If someone can find some evidence to justify using a common name in English, it would be a definite improvement on the original dry title of Assyrian statue (BM 124963) that I have started this with. --Fæ (talk) 14:56, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Unattractive

As mentioned diff, the recent temporary BM exhibition displays the statue with a poster that makes a claim that the statue was deliberately unattractive. It is unclear why this assertion was made, it may have been more of an unprovable hypothesis to fit the theme of the exhibition. I do not have the exhibition catalogue, which may repeat the assertion, but the online database makes no similar claim, and as far as I am aware, there are no academic papers that support this point of view. This seems surprising, and not based on any past research or any obvious evidence based on other early Assyrian works. @Johnbod: could you add a source for the change? --Fæ (talk) 09:54, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

Well, I was surprised by it, & there aren't many other females in Assyrian sculpture to compare with, but that is what it said on the caption. I'm going again & will look at the catalogue for a ref. In time they will probably add the catalogue entries to the online comments, as they often do. No doubt it has not come out of the blue - there is also a book on Assyrian sculpture I haven't seen. • "...was originally set up in the temple of Ishtar..." (my italics) does not seem to quite agree with the BM online who say "near" the temple. Johnbod (talk) 12:24, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
