Talk:Ascospore

are ascospores produced asexually or sexually?

A little of both. The ascus (sac-shaped cell in which the spores are produced) initially contains two nuclei from the two parent fungi, which fuse when the ascus is formed. This zygote nucleus then undergoes meiosis to produce four nuclei, each of which then undergoes mitosis once to produce a total of eight ascospres. The fusion and meiosis are a sexual process, but the following mitosis division technically is not. -- EncycloPetey 04:51, 20 November 2005 (UTC) Everything that has been written is nonsense, please get some with a little bit more insight in the subject. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.182.18.18 (talk) 10:32, 29 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
