Re-Write

Artpace Updates

As a San Antonian and Artpace fan, I felt this entry was a little out of date. Although it may have been correct when originally written, there have been some changes which I felt should be included to give people a more accurate view of the organization. I reinstated Shaebe898's update because it corrected errors about Artpace's funding and included more in-depth information about its founder, its residency program, and its exhibitions.

This is the first time that I've ever attempted to edit a Wiki entry, so please accept my apologies for any errors. (Any feedback about how to improve appreciated!) You need to stick with one account and you need to back up your claims from reliable sources. Sourcing it from Artpace is not appropriate especially considering the article was recently re-written and there have been numerous issues of Artpace staff overwriting it to include only their favoried information. Further, you need to be aware of neutral POV as well as copyright violations. Many of the recent edits have been copy/pasted. TravellingCari 21:58, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

This is my only account. I am a member of the Artpace staff, and the only thing that I'm trying to do is to get valid information about Artpace on Wikipedia. My number one problem is that the first sentence of this entry is incorrect. The citation is from 1995, and it is no longer valid. Artpace is now publicly funded. This needs to be clearly stated. Thanks for your note. You need to be aware of WP:COI as well as the business FAQ especially when you do not portray yourself honestly at first: As a San Antonian and Artpace fan. You need to find a published reliable source (not coming from Artpace) that describes the funding of Artpace if you want it included. I'm not convinced that its source of funding is relevant. Remember that this is not a place to advertise, and therefore there's nothing that "needs" to be stated. Wikipedia is abot presenting organizations in a neutral, factual and encyclopedic tone, not one that staff wants to see. Nothing wrong with the edit, but something to keep in mind. Happy to continue to help, while I believe you when you say this is your only account, take a look at the article's history, your colleagues do not have a history of following guidelines when it cones to the article. I didn't present myself as an employee because I feared that there was something barring "internal sources" from Wikipedia. I absolutely believe in the concept of Wikipedia as a source for information, and I'll do my damndest to keep the NPOV necessary to keep any edits done here valid. The reason that funding source(s) is important is because Artpace (and all publicly funded institutions) needs public support. There is still a stigma attached to Artpace as being funded entirely by Ms. Pace's generosity, and this is simply not the case. The "needs" on Wikipedia are to present factual information, and the current information is either incomplete or incorrect. I aim to repair that. Regarding my co-workers edits: we have felt that we have been unfairly barred from editing information on this site. I'm going to attempt to update information one piece at a time using readily available information (using verifiable citations). If adjustments need to be made, so be it. Thanks for the quick responses. Re: unfairbanning, the only one I had direct contact with was "CEmeryBustamante" and to be honest s/he earned that block because s/he refused to discuss any edits and simply made the same ones over and over despite being informed as to why they were inappropriate. Imagine you're in a meeting and someone does that. Not appropriate there, or here. You're doing the right thing in discussing and asking. Your edits will likely be more balanced in the end which is a *good* thing. A quick search doesn't show anything conclusive about Artpace's funding, but I'd imagine you'll find something in the local press, or something similar that verified. One thing that's important to add, documentation on why Artpace is notable. I know it is, I have a passion for the arts (see WP:MUSEUMS), but as someone whose sole San Antonio experience was the Alamo when I was 9, I need to know more about what makes it notable. Funding

Thanks again for your patience and advice. I really appreciate your willingness to ensure that Artpace's entry is updated and properly cited. As far as citations regarding Artpace's status as a public charity go, the best is probably the IRS Pub 78 listing: http://www.irs.gov/app/pub-78/search.do?nameSearchTypeStarts=false&names=artpace&nameSearchTypeAll=false&city=san+antonio&state=TX&country=USA&deductibility=all&dispatchMethod=search&submitName=Search which codes Artpace as "a public charity with a 50% deductibility limitation." Additionally, Artpace is listed as a grant recipient on multiple grantors' websites (National Endowment for the Arts, City of San Antonio's Office of Cultural Affairs, Texas Commission on the Arts, for eg.) Would that qualify as appropriate documentation of public charity status? Or, credit lines for exhibitions and programs are sometimes included in press about the shows--would that be better? As far as what's most notable about Artpace, the International Artist-In-Residence Program would be the stand-out. It is the only residency program of its model in the world (i.e. the only one that stipulates the involvement of a Texas artist, national artist, and international artist). Artpace does not select the artists who participate in its residencies. Artpace's Programs Committee chooses 3 guest curators a year to select the 3 artists, therefore resulting in a variety of artists and differing curatorial visions. The only special restriction for guest curators to abide by is that he/she must select one artist from Texas, one artist from somewhere else in the U.S, and one international artist for the residency. Each residency is a 4 month period. The first two months of the residency consist of the artists living onsite and creating new work at Artpace. Then the works are publicly exhibited at Artpace for a two month period following the time the artists are occupying the Artpace building. Sorry to go on and on, but would you agree that this would qualify as most unique/notable aspect of Artpace? Can you have a look at the edit I just made? I have a question, the IRS link you gave me (totally acceptable) shows the public funding arm as Artpace, Inc. where as Guidestar shows Artpace Inc. as well as "ARTPACE FOUNDATION FOR CONTEMPORARY ART-SAN ANTONIO". (If the link I sent doesn't work, just search 'artpace' on the main screen. Do you know which one it is, or both. Would just like to fix it correctly. The artist in residence program does sound interesting, Artforum sounds like a good source. Also on the name, what is the organization's name? We can rename it, I see Artpace, Artpace, Inc., the foundation that's referenced in the article and, from here, Artpace San Antonio. TravellingCari 14:09, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Sorry I haven't checked in for a while--been too busy to keep up! Artpace's official name is "Artpace San Antonio." If we can change the name, then that would be great. I've been compiling references and citations, and will hopefully have the opportunity to edit soon. General Layout/Design of entry

I'd like to have more information about Artpace on this entry, so I was looking through similar institutions on Wikipedia--I saw this entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Site_Santa_Fe and thought that it would be a good guideline for layout. We could include the history, including both its beginnings as a privately funded venture of Linda Pace's and then explain its current structure. I also like the list of prominent artists as featured on the Site Santa Fe entry. Again, just fishing for ways to expand upon this entry... Meheathcott (talk) 02:22, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Good plan, but note that Site Santa Fe is not sourced and that is not a model to follow. If you want to add history and prominent artists, you need to include citations from reliable, independent sources. Keep in mind why this is encyclopedic and what sets it apart from every other gallery, while keeping in mind WP:OTHERSTUFF. TravellingCari 02:28, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Understood. I wasn't concerning myself with the citations (or lack thereof) on the Site Santa Fe entry. I was more interested in the general form and layout of it. I will make every attempt to keep the Artpace entry valid as far as citations from neutral sources goes. Hi all. I'm here to ask if some kind soul out there is willing to update this Wikipedia article to reflect Artpace's current executive director. I have a conflict of interest as an Artpace employee.
