Assessment edit

I have reviewed this article for the Military History project and believe that it is currently a Start class article. Please note that the project template does not support C class, so it is either a Start or a B and as currently I don't feel it quite meets B1 and B2 of the B class criteria I must rate it as a Start. I feel that the article could be raised up to B class with only a few tweaks, however, as it is pretty close. The following improvements might help:

  • Coverage: Could the article be expanded to discuss the history of the medal a bit more. Currently it provides a date when it was instituted, but does not discuss how, when, where, why etc. in the body of the text. Perhaps a brief paragraph could be added under a section heading such as Institution or similar, in which these things could be discussed.
  • Referencing: generally not bad at all, however, I feel a couple of extra citations would improve the article. These could be added in the following places where important points are made that might be questioned (I'm certainly not questioning them, but someone might come along and want to find where those points are discussed in sources, so a cite would help - if they are the same as the cite already mentioned in the paragraph, please just add that cite and consolidate the ref):
    • Second paragraph, Awards section: at the end of the second sentence that discusses the number of awards that Wellington received;
    • Second paragraph, Discontinuation section: at the end of the third sentence, discussing the eligible engagements for the MGSM including Egypt.
  • An image of the medal and or ribbon would greatly improve the article (but is not required for B class and I understand that a suitable one might not be available for use).

Anyway, that is it for now. Good work so far. If you wish to seek re-assessment later, please add the article to the list at WP:MHA. Cheers. — AustralianRupert (talk) 01:44, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the feedback. I have plans for the article, but not enough time! Anyway, useful links to remind me: [1] [2] [3] Gwinva (talk) 10:03, 14 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The cross of the Prince of Orange edit

I have translated and added to the article on the Dutch Wikipedia. To us, in the Netherlands, it would be of some interest to know the six military engagements that were remembered on the Prince's cross and his two clasps. Our Prince, later King William II of the Netherlands wore his Golden Cross on many occasions.

The sources that I have ar not specific.

The exact name of the decoration is somewhat ambigious. Was it instituted as simply "a gold cross". Was it instituted by an Order in Council, a warrant or a simple order by the Ministry of War?

What is this? edit

William Carr Beresford, Viscount Beresford is wearing a gold cross, is it the Peninsular Cross?, on a collar with lions and shields.

These two symbols are found on the Army Gold Medal. Is this an honour that was given to him as a veteran of the War in Spain?

It seems likely. He does nor wear his Pensinsular Cross.
