Article Creation

Ive created an article for alma college, I have a few photos that could be uploaded of mine if someone would give me directions how to upload them (much appreciated). Also for making the page a part of a project scope and assessmentas a stub, again much appreciated if someone could explain to me how, thanks a bunch Ottawa4ever (talk) 22:41, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Did some major work recently with the help of another user: small grainy picture added should be okay as a temp. Still needed: More information about the history of the school, the proposed demolition controversey and fire, And more alumni (if they cant be found should properly remove the sectionOttawa4ever (talk) 00:21, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

I managed to track down a pdf of the archive information which seems to be a wealth of knowledge to put into this article. In the coming days Ill begin to implement these sources. Ottawa4ever (talk) 23:43, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Alma: Jumbo The Elephant

I know that the site itself might be viewed as a type of "forum" and policy tries to steer us away from including those types of links, but I'd suggest that the comic itself really is a sort of unique "resource" pertaining to the college, especially for younger readers of the encyclopedia. I was kind of impressed at how well they managed to blend actual local history with their yarn, although the details are a little sketchy, historically speaking, what the heck it's a comic. Personally I think interesting younger people, even in a general sense, in local history topics is always a good thing, even if it means making it a little more 'colourful' in the telling. If I understand the premise of that site correctly, I don't think the comic will be available on a permanent basis regardless. I would support its inclusion in the external links section in the interim. PS I'm still working on digging up some Alma images. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 01:25, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Expansion

I think its almost there still in desperate needs of two photos one showing something related to the fire, the other a better into photo. Ill (or if someone beats me to it) need to go thorugh and check for POV. Will add another wave of revisions shortly Ottawa4ever (talk) 00:18, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Fire on Google Earth

if you look up St Thomas Ontario on Google Earth, and look just south of the centre of the city, you'll see an orange glow. That's the Alma College fire. I don't know how to capture images from Google Earth, or create links to it. Jru Gordon (talk) 02:16, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

I'll admit that visually it certainly looks like what you're describing on the Google earth image, but I think we should hold off awhile before definitively declaring that it's a picture of the fire itself while it's occurring. One good reason is that the satellite image is dated May 9, 2004, four years before the building burned. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 04:29, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Can I ask though where you found the 2004 date? It does appear that the map was recently updated from before.Ottawa4ever (talk) 14:20, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

I lifted the date May 9, 2004 from the lower left hand corner of the display window on Google Earth, although, take note that it only shows intermittently, appearing and disappearing as you 'zoom' in and out. Also, if you click on the 'clock face' symbol on the tool bar at the top of the Google Earth display, you'll notice that a control device appears in the upper left of the image, which purportedly enables you to view past versions of the images. To tell you the truth, in the past, I've found that these "date" functions on Google Earth don't always work particularly well in terms of functionality, although I've never had any reason to believe that the dates they were displaying at any given time were just plain "wrong". Believe me, if I can be presented with any reliable evidence that demonstrates that the current image of St. Thomas on Google Earth was in fact taken on the day of the fire at Alma, I'll be the first person to support mention of it in the article, I think it would be an amazing coincidence. In fact, if that is the case, I think a screen capture of it would be a more than appropriate addition to the article as well. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 17:06, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

(Sent a few emails out myself asking around) Hopefully an answer will come. I agree that it would be best for confirmation through a source (hopefully the T-J) picks up on it. I beleive its highly likely this is the fire (wind direction is right) otherwise its quite an erie (and dare I say spooky) coincidence. Material added March 10, 2010

I just noticed that a fairly large amount of information was added to the article today, that doesn't appear to be referenced; at least through the footnote that appears at the end of the section it was added to. Because the claims being made are so detailed, it would be a good idea in my mind, to provide a specific reference in support of the new material. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 21:47, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

I wouldnt be surprised if theres some accuracy to some of the unsourced info, but if the information cannot be verified (and especially if it contradicts other information that has been verified) it should be removed from the article until a reference can be provided for it. This is excerpted from the following; [1]

Alma's Music School, Junior School and Kindergarten were sceduled to re-open on September 6, 1994, but were permanetly cancelled September 2. The Secondary school was scheduled to re-open as a co-ed facility in September. However, low enrolment was cited as problematic and the school did not re-open. Alma College finally closed in September 1994 It is entirely possible that another source can cite that there were building problems as well, but essentially more than one source can verify that low enrolement contributed to the schools eventual closure. This paticular source taken from the Alma fonds does not reference this (building problems) however. Some additional text contradicting other sources has also been added (ie. vague historic site date as 1994). I beleive some of the referencing said this was 1976 (October 28th to be exact).For the time being i have reverted the unsourced text that has been added. I completely agree with your decision to revert all of it as "unreferenced"; these claims are very specific and details and should be supported by reliable sources if they're to be added to the article in my opinion.
