Isn't it funny that hip hop did not originate in Africa? Rather, it originated in the United States and then spread to Africa. Since hip hop supposedly originated as a form of Black music, one would logically think that it would be the other way around.

Hip hop did not originate as a form of "Black music", but was invented by African Americans. As a result, it is perfectly logical that it began in the US and then spread to the rest of the world. Tuf-Kat 02:44, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC)

Merging

Suggested articles should not be merged this page. They don't meet WP:Merge conditions: They don't have duplicate or major overlapping content with this article, are expandable and are not minor subjects. First of all, I'm sorry, i forgot to come back and create this discussion, when i added the merge tags i was on my way out. Anyway I'm have to say that you are wrong, they do meet several of the merge conditions, which by the way are not solid rules anyway. As i explained on my talk page, and have demonstrated on the pages you reverted, the individual countries, the articles as they were, were a mess of dead spam links of deleted articles, and original research for example (copied from my talk page)

First of all, on the Tanzanian hip hop page, there's the intro paragraph, which i merged, then there are several extr'Bold textemely unencyclopedic paragraphs on something called "bongo flava" (example sentence: Bongo Flava makes up its own rules and these guys don't need to copy their brothers in America, but have a sure clear sense of who they are and what sound it is they're making.) followed by some stuff about Tanzanian groups, which i also merged. Then we have South africa, a long long list if red links with about 6 legitimate links to south african hip hop artists. This is followed by a block of unref'd poorly written advertisement (example: Currently, South African hip hop is at a very exciting stage as it is begins to acquire its own musical style. In the same breath, individual provinces are developing their own styles of hip == hop.)

After removing most of the crap like this, there is very little left to the articles, which means they fall under the third point. Second, you seem to have misunderstood the second criteria. African hip hop and all these smaller articles do overlap. Each is about an African country's hip hop. They could quite easily be slotted into one larger africa page. they may also fall under the first point, not one of the articles suggests anyway in which Rwandan hip hop, for example, is any different from any other african countries. Also none of the articles met the standards for a halfway decent article, they were full of dead links, OR, spammishness, and were for the most part totally unsourced. Finally, i can assure you that in no way is this a case of regional bias, and i resent the insinuation. I chose Africa because the african country articles were the first ones i came across, i do intend to merge some of the other hip hop articles, provided consensus is achieved, to form European, Asian and maybe south American hip hop articles.--Jac16888 (talk) 13:28, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Needs work

This article has multiple issues, and needs some experienced WKP editors with some knowledge of the subject. I might put out a call at the Village Pump or somewhere. The opening sentence is misleading - it was not widespread American influence that kick-started local hip-hop artistes, it was the widespread influence of African American music and culture, rather a different thing. The second sentence is badly phrased - is meaningless, hip-hop is not a man with a suitcase. Hip-hop had been heard in Senegal before 1985, perhaps the writer meant that the first local hip-hop artists were heard of in 1985.

It would be helpful to know how often the Guinean Africa Rap Festival is held.

I'm going to remove some of the more pointless and spammish comments that have been added, and correct some of the mixed up statements and poor grammar. I have removed the following inaccurate statement: This article also needs updating as the African hip-hop scene has been evolving quite quickly. External Links: verification & relevance

Some links were recently removed for being dead. Some for being for promotional. There are duplicates for example "africas gateway" under general links and some other external links point to resources that last saw updates up to 4 years ago. Surely more relevant links would be welcome. Perhaps someone is willing to have a look at this in depth.

Saw no response here and have removed dead and mirror links from the general links section. There is a misleading link present in the form of "africahit.com", this site is an amalgam of soccer(football), politics and music. This isn't a Hip Hop site at it's core. I suggest removing it. Objections?
