Dated language and style edit
The article has an attribution to the article in the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica, and it shows!
The language and the style are very dated; most readers under 30, I suspect, would have difficulty understanding the phrasing. Also, the article has many statements of opinion that are otherwise unattributed. Alas, I have no better sources.
So I feel that the entire article needs a rewrite, both to modernise the language and, to a lesser extent, to minimise the amount of "fluff". Any takers?
