Biblical Reference edit

I read that Abel Magwitch represents the Biblical character Abel, while his well-off nemesis Compeyson represents Cain. Anyone have any comments on this?

I don't think Dickens' work has any abundance of biblical reference to it, perhaps if you can find another case of a possible biblical reference it would support the claim Magwitch 09:16, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

It came to my mind too... After all, he was a sheep farmer, just as biblical Abel, wasn't he?

New South Wales in Australia or in Canada ? edit

Are you sure Dickens refers to New South Wales in Australia? There was also one in Canada at the time... Slamazzar (talk) 02:19, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

@ Slamazzar : Hello ! Do you think there were then enough sheep in northern Ontario to make a big fortune out of their meat & fleeces ;-) ? ... T.y. Arapaima (talk) 08:52, 7 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
New South Wales, Australia (on his album, "Good as I've Been to You," Dylan recorded a song about that, Botany Bay), was founded by the English as a penal colony. The article does not explain why Magwitch was "a wanted man" on his return to England: felons that had served their time were released but prohibited from returning to England; they had to make their way in Australia. Magwitch became a wealthy sheep farmer. By returning to England, Magwitch defied the terms of his parole. BubbleDine (talk) 15:53, 9 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
