that Johann Maria Farina created 4711 is just a myth and there are no sources. the german wiki says that the myth goes like this: "some say that Wilhelm Mülhens got the recipe in the year 1792 from Franz Maria Carl Gereon Farina, a monk, as a present at his wedding. but that we only know that Wilhelm Mülhens lived in cologne since 1797 and that he started making 'cologne water' since 1799." so why does the english wikipedia say it's a fact and gives credit to Farina. shouldn't we take myths with a grain of salt? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.254.22.162 (talk) 15:10, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

1792 - the birth of an international brand

In 1792 a Carthusian monk presented the newly-married Mulhens couple a seemingly modest wedding present. But this gift affected their future like no other; as it contained: The secret formula for an "aqua mirabilis", an invigorating medicinal "miracle water" later called "Eau de Cologne". Wilhelm Mulhens quickly recognised the value of this formula and soon after started to build a small factory in the street "Glockengasse" in Cologne.

In 1794, during the period of French occupation in Cologne, the French commander ordered consecutive numbering for all houses. The Mulhens building on "Glockengasse", where "Eau de Cologne" was produced, received the housenumber 4711. In 1875 this number became the registered trademark for the international brand 4711 ORIGINAL EAU DE COLOGNE.

4711 Eau de Cologne. Citrus with traces of rosemary and lavender, a spicy etheral scent for both men and women. Considered a unisex cologne.

use of "4711" by software engineers

Well, when I was working in Frankfurt, Germany as a software engineer in 1992 and 1993, I saw many instances of such usage. When I asked around, I was told that this was very common behavior, akin to using 69 or 105 (69 in octal) in US. I don't know if this qualifies as verifiable source...

Thanks for the additional background. A verifiable source is one that can be cited in the article to allow another editor to verify the text of the article. Using google.com and books.google.com, I have found several examples of the use of "4711" in a SW context, including the first one, which references the perfume. It seems to be used in the same way that "foo" and "bar" are used. --Jtir 22:53, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

4-7-11

The pronunciation was changed some time ago by an un-named contributor. I can see no evidence for this change, in fact all the searches seem to confirm the four-seven-eleven version, in fact, and I understand that this is original research, all the TV and cinema advertisements of the 60s and 70s use this, as do the current owners of the brand. On further research, Irish and Australian marketing seems to have used the same pronunciation. I have reverted the un-named edit to reflect this.Splodgeness (talk) 12:39, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

I have heard only the pronunciation four-seven-eleven in British English. Forty-seven eleven appears to be a literal translation of the German. Edwin Greenwood (talk) 09:51, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

French troops and house numbering
