Helicopter or plane?

Different sources have reported different things. The most specific source I've seen so far, CNN, has reported that it was a plane and noted what kind, which seems convincing.[1] If it is a plane, the article will need to be moved. Khazar2 (talk) 23:06, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

We always can, but Huffington Post, WSJ, NBC, etc reported it as helicopter. It can be changed if more info is gathered soon. --Activism1234 23:13, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

BBC reported this as coming from an unnamed civili aviation representative, so it may not be true. Later reports should confirm or deny this. --Activism1234 23:54, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

BBC, NYT, and Al Jazeera all have it on their front pages as a plane crash, which is presumably up-to-date info. Antonov also appears to make only planes, not helicopters. I'll be surprised if this turns out to be a helicopter at this point, but you're right that WSJ is still reporting helicopter, so I'm fine with holding off till it's clear. Given the different sources, we are all guessing here .. but the Aviation Herald source seems to have a better understanding of the planes that Alfa Airlines Sudan operates and this indicates that it was either a AN24 or AN26. This has been referred to by other sources as well. Plus, apart from military troop carriers, I doubt if there are too many helicopters that can carry 30 odd people. We can't rule it out being a helo, a Mil Mi-8 can carry 30 pax and examples are operating all over the world. On the other hand, IMO it doesn't make sense for a helo to be used for a flight from Khartoum - assuming it was from there - as the distance is over 400 miles, which means that a helicopter would have to stop to refuel; the trip would take 3-4 times as long in a helo as a fixed-wing turboprop. And yes, Antonov is a purely fixed-wing manufacturer. YSSYguy (talk) 09:22, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

According to the Aviation accident article naming conventions the title should be in the format <<year>> <<airline>> <<aircraft>> <<event>>. Should this article be renamed to 2012 Alfa Airlines Antonov An-26 crash? --Daniel (talk) 13:14, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
