2012 Northern Italy earthquake2012 Italian earthquakeWP:PRECISE, there have been no other large Italian quakes this year (List of earthquakes in Italy) and the year is closing in on the halfway mark. --Relisted JHunterJ (talk) 13:28, 30 May 2012 (UTC) 70.24.251.208 (talk) 11:11, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Strong oppose at 2012 Italian earthquake. WP:CRYSTAL. A region is preferred. Tbhotch. Grammatically incorrect? Correct it! See terms and conditions. 05:28, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
    • What is CRYSTAL about it? It is the only article on an earthquake in Italy for 2012, there's nothing CRYSTAL with that. 70.24.251.208 (talk) 05:25, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
      • What's CRYSTAL is the assumption there will be no futher earthquakes in Italy in 2012 implied by the singular, undabb'd title. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:06, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
        • WP:CRYSTAL is the assumption that there will be another earthquake article for Italy in 2012. We deal with what has already happened, not what might happen. Since there is no other article, WP:PRECISE would be "2012 Italian earthquake(s)". 70.24.251.208 (talk) 06:39, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose 2012 Italy Earthquake, Support the current name, or 2012 Northern Italy Earthquake (which i note is a redirect to the current article anyway) Trex21 (talk) 11:46, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Any additional comments:I had alarm set at 4 am, 20 May 2012, at hotel in Florence, Italy...taxi arrived at hotel at 5:15 am...flight boarded on time and took off at 6:40 am for Munich. Nobody said anything about the 4:03 am earthquake. So, it was not felt in Florence, which is approx. 75 miles south of Bologna.
Bologna is not correct... probably Emilia is good but there was another 2012 earthquake in Emilian provinces: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_Italy --Grifter72 (talk) 16:06, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
The correct name must be 2012 Emilia-Romagna earthquake. (the province epicenter, must see past earthquakes) - EugεnS¡m¡on(14) ® 16:15, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
No damages in Romagna, some in Lombardy. Epicenter was in Emilia.--Grifter72 (talk) 16:42, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Without some source to back up all these more localized names, WP:OR -- Northern Italy and Italian are descriptive but these province town city names probably would need sourcing that people are using those names. 70.24.251.208 (talk) 10:08, 21 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Emilia is only a historical region. We must use the same name that is for Belarusian, Italian, Polish, Russian articles. So I will move back to 2012 Emilia-Romagna earthquake even if Grifter72 will be not happy for this. - EugεnS¡m¡on(14) ® 17:01, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

"Emilia Romagna" is incorrect because earthquake was centered in Emilia historical region. If you want to use "Emilia Romagna", you have for example to change also 1930 Irpinia earthquake. Why that page is not called "1930 Campania earthquake"? --Grifter72 (talk) 14:47, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

In Italy is "Terremoto in Emilia":

--Grifter72 (talk) 15:31, 21 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • CNN is claiming the epicenter to be around 4 miles from Camposanto, and this is close to what I see on Google Earth using the USGS plug-in for the epicenter location. Looks like that's the closest municipality, though it was not stated if it suffered any damage. Higher damage probably elsewhere. Dawnseeker2000 16:17, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • I don't see anything particularly wrong with the current title. There is no consistent naming amongst the sources: the EMSC, USGS, BBC, Reuters use 'Northern Italy', INGV use "Piano-Padana Emiliana" or (correct me if I'm wrong please) the 'Emilia part of the Po Plain', as for the two sources from Italian media one uses 'Terremoto in Emilia' the other is headlined 'Terrore in Emilia'. That gives a fairly even split between the current name and 'northern Italy'. Mikenorton (talk) 21:34, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
INGV uses "Pianura padana emiliana", which means of course "Emilia part of the Po Plain". --79.44.191.190 (talk) 13:43, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Actually there are three types of naming patterns: for cities, if a specific city is heavily damaged, e.g. 2011 Christchurch EQ, 1907 San Francisco EQ, for provinces or regions, if a whole area was heavily affected, 2008 Sichuan EQ – those "regions" often correspond with the Flinn-Engdahl regions in question. And some are named for countries, 2010 Chile EQ, 2010 Haiti EQ, mostly if a whole country was affected. The quake we're discussing did take place in region 545 and that it described as "northern Italy". From this POV 2012 Northern Italy earthquake is a valid name, 2012 Emilia earthquake is a valid name es well. 2012 Italy earthquake is not, since that would implify a much bigger and much worser earthquake. So don't move to 2012 Italy earthquake. --Matthiasb (talk) 19:54, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Relisting comment. Multiple moves were improperly performed after this move request was opened. I've protected the article from further non-admin moves and relisted. -- JHunterJ (talk) 13:28, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Note: The most recent move was unrelated to the above naming dispute; it served only to pluralize the title after a second earthquake occurred in the region. As this is essential and uncontroversial, I've restored the pluralization (but not the other changes made during the move debate). —David Levy 17:12, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Cheese region edit

300000 wheels of Parmesan and Gran Padano cheese buried under rubble and possibly not salvageable - estimated 200 million euro's damage in loss of cheese and a futher 150 million in cheese making facilities. [1] EdwardLane (talk) 09:04, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've added a section on the cheese, thanks. Mikenorton (talk) 20:51, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

"Emilia earthquakes" not "Northern Italy earthquakes" edit

I think that this page must be named "2012 Emilia earthquakes" because the region which is more hit by this earthquakes is Emilia-Romgna and in the italian page this article is called "Terremoti dell'Emilia del 2012" (2012 Emilia earthquakes) we must renamed this page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nick.mon (talkcontribs) 12:04, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

We don't name pages based on other language wikipedias. As far as I can see both the current name and the one it was changed from are supported by usage in reliable english language sources as in WP:COMMONNAME. I saw no strong reason to change the title, but I also see no strong reason to change it back. Mikenorton (talk) 13:22, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Why "Northern Italy earthquakes" or "Emilia-Romagna earthquakes" titles are wrong edit

Here you can see a declaration of Italian Tourism Minister Guidi: "The mass media have conveyed the idea that the quake hit all of Emilia Romagna - Gnudi added - and unfortunately some people cancelled but we need to provide truthful information"

Page name should be: 2012 Emilia earthquakes as for example is for Enea: http://www.reluis.it/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=213&lang=en

--Grifter72 (talk) 06:50, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Maybe what is really wrong here is the consolidation. I suspect we would not be having nearly so much trouble if they had been entered as separate articles, and a third article created covering the seismic history of the region - that is the article that should be called by the more general name. And that seismic history article could also handle [2003-09-11 23:42 Emilia-Romagna, Bologna 5.0] and other previous quaakes in the Emilia region. Given the current arrangement of articles my vote is for "Emilia" Anthonypeterscott (talk) 07:28, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm Italian and I live in Italy. In my honest opinion and without any doubt the correct name is "2012 Emilia earthquakes". Jacopo Werther iγ∂ψ=mψ 21:12, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Same for me, please rename 2012 Emilia earthquakes. --Accurimbono (talk) 13:11, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • As this page is currently move-protected, there will need to be another 'requested move', but the existing discussion will need to be closed first, which will preferably need an admin. Mikenorton (talk) 17:22, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • While technically the shocks havent hit the historical region of Romagna, most of them, especially the May 29th (university was closed due to the aftershocks) were felt in Forli which is Romagna and this morning there was a [in Ravenna 6 June], [in english] 4.5, no losses of life reported. Felt in forli and Rimini and as far as Marche. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.204.39.160 (talk) 08:18, 6 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Number of casualties needs to be updated edit

The number of victims caused by the 29th May shock rose to 19 - and the total to 26 - after two women (ospitalized after the quake) died on June 5th. Source for the news is available on the corresponding article from it.wiki. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.51.130.151 (talk) 00:07, 10 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

5.9, 6.0 or 6.1? edit

Which is it? USGS says 6.0. 78.156.109.166 (talk) 10:04, 26 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

The information panel states magnitude 6.1, the article text states it as 5.9. 94.174.240.3 (talk) 12:21, 20 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
