• Oppose As someone whose family lives not far from that area, the current name (Emilia) is so far the most appropriate and the one consistently used in the news. This is in line with previous earthquakes in Italy that hit entire regions and are thereby identified with their name (1980 Irpinia earthquake and 1968 Belice earthquake). Any additional comments:I had alarm set at 4 am, 20 May 2012, at hotel in Florence, Italy...taxi arrived at hotel at 5:15 am...flight boarded on time and took off at 6:40 am for Munich. Nobody said anything about the 4:03 am earthquake. So, it was not felt in Florence, which is approx. 75 miles south of Bologna.

• (Italian) earthquakes are normally named after the town they've hit, see Category:Earthquakes in Italy. In which case this might get called the 2012 Bologna earthquake or 2012 Emilia earthquake Tom B (talk) 11:39, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Without some source to back up all these more localized names, WP:OR -- Northern Italy and Italian are descriptive but these province town city names probably would need sourcing that people are using those names. 70.24.251.208 (talk) 10:08, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Emilia is only a historical region. We must use the same name that is for Belarusian, Italian, Polish, Russian articles. So I will move back to 2012 Emilia-Romagna earthquake even if Grifter72 will be not happy for this. - EugεnS¡m¡on(14) ® 17:01, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

"Emilia Romagna" is incorrect because earthquake was centered in Emilia historical region. If you want to use "Emilia Romagna", you have for example to change also 1930 Irpinia earthquake. Why that page is not called "1930 Campania earthquake"? --Grifter72 (talk) 14:47, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

• CNN is claiming the epicenter to be around 4 miles from Camposanto, and this is close to what I see on Google Earth using the USGS plug-in for the epicenter location. Looks like that's the closest municipality, though it was not stated if it suffered any damage. Higher damage probably elsewhere. Dawnseeker2000 16:17, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

• I don't see anything particularly wrong with the current title. There is no consistent naming amongst the sources: the EMSC, USGS, BBC, Reuters use 'Northern Italy', INGV use "Piano-Padana Emiliana" or (correct me if I'm wrong please) the 'Emilia part of the Po Plain', as for the two sources from Italian media one uses 'Terremoto in Emilia' the other is headlined 'Terrore in Emilia'. • Actually there are three types of naming patterns: for cities, if a specific city is heavily damaged, e.g. 2011 Christchurch EQ, 1907 San Francisco EQ, for provinces or regions, if a whole area was heavily affected, 2008 Sichuan EQ – those "regions" often correspond with the Flinn-Engdahl regions in question. And some are named for countries, 2010 Chile EQ, 2010 Haiti EQ, mostly if a whole country was affected. The quake we're discussing did take place in region 545 and that it described as "northern Italy". From this POV 2012 Northern Italy earthquake is a valid name, 2012 Emilia earthquake is a valid name es well. 2012 Italy earthquake is not, since that would implify a much bigger and much worser earthquake. Cheese region

"Emilia earthquakes" not "Northern Italy earthquakes"

I think that this page must be named "2012 Emilia earthquakes" because the region which is more hit by this earthquakes is Emilia-Romgna and in the italian page this article is called "Terremoti dell'Emilia del 2012" (2012 Emilia earthquakes) we must renamed this page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nick.mon (talk • contribs) 12:04, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

We don't name pages based on other language wikipedias. As far as I can see both the current name and the one it was changed from are supported by usage in reliable english language sources as in WP:COMMONNAME. Why "Northern Italy earthquakes" or "Emilia-Romagna earthquakes" titles are wrong

Here you can see a declaration of Italian Tourism Minister Guidi: "The mass media have conveyed the idea that the quake hit all of Emilia Romagna - Gnudi added - and unfortunately some people cancelled but we need to provide truthful information"

Maybe what is really wrong here is the consolidation. I suspect we would not be having nearly so much trouble if they had been entered as separate articles, and a third article created covering the seismic history of the region - that is the article that should be called by the more general name. And that seismic history article could also handle [2003-09-11 23:42 Emilia-Romagna, Bologna 5.0] and other previous quaakes in the Emilia region. Given the current arrangement of articles my vote is for "Emilia" Anthonypeterscott (talk) 07:28, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

• While technically the shocks havent hit the historical region of Romagna, most of them, especially the May 29th (university was closed due to the aftershocks) were felt in Forli which is Romagna and this morning there was a [in Ravenna 6 June], [in english] 4.5, no losses of life reported. Number of casualties needs to be updated

The number of victims caused by the 29th May shock rose to 19 - and the total to 26 - after two women (ospitalized after the quake) died on June 5th.
