Talk:2007–2008 world food price crisis

Proposal for a New Stub edit

The section at the end titled 'Food price decreases' needs a lot of work. The concluding sentences of this section merit another stub:

"By early 2011 food prices had risen again to surpass the record highs of 2008. Some commentators saw this as the resumption of the price spike seen in 2007–08.[159] Prices had dropped after good weather helped increase grain yields while demand had dropped due to the recession.[160]"

or a link to the current stub: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010–11_global_food_crisis

Food riots were also experienced across the globe from 2009-2011. While they were related to the 2007-08 riots, different factors were involved. It would be nice to see the wiki community acknowledge these events and begin compiling related and relevant information. Geohutt1 (talk)

Rewriting needed! edit

IMHO it seems to me this article has lost its focus in many aspects, and should be rewritten. It falls short of Wikipedia objectives of neutrality and conciseness.
- First the list of possible causes for the food prices spike is too long, and could be revamped along these lines:
Some of them like the population growth are explicitly ruled out, and therefore do not justify a whole detailed section. It's irrelevant.
Financial speculation is downright debatable (and much debated). The one-liner statement about "destabilizing influences [and] speculation" is not gonna cut it.
It is not clear how trade liberalization has lead to a price instability, unless the author meant through the decreasing of inventories (which makes sense). These 2 sections could be merged.
Soil and productivity losses should be merged/linked with the increase in fertilizer prices. That's the only way it makes sense.
Sections about the rising level of ozone, idle farm land could be gotten rid of, as they do not contribute much (if at all) in explaining the prices spikes.

- Too many external links in the article text. We need to delete the deadlinks (there are some) and convert the remaining ones into footnotes wherever relevant.

This is just my opinion, but I think we could do a much better job for this article, and the topic is really worth it. --- Edmond8674 (talk) 09:32, 9 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
