"The islands are occupated by the British Empire and are claimed by Argentina. In spanish the name of the islands is "Georgias del Sur", hence the letters are ".gs" and not ".sgi" (south georgia islands)"

This second sentence appears to suggest that the Argentine claim is accepted by the international standards body (the only logical explanation for their using a Spanish name) - which would not seem to be very likely. The first sentence is worded in such a way that it appears to give the Argentine POV precedence over the British one.

It's not ".sgi" because by convention the two-letter ccTLD's are used. It's not ".sg" because that's already being used by Singapore. It strikes me in that case that reversing the letters would be a logical solution in English (to give "Georgia South").

For these reasons I have reverted the edit to the previous version by User:Thijs!bot. Pfainuk 14:49, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for reverting the above. It smells like crap. The full name of these islands are South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It's possible ISO came up with .gs by putting the first letters of "Georgia" and "Sandwich" together, since I believe ISO ignores common names used by nations in forming the codes. - Thanks, Hoshie 09:53, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
