Shanghai Daily

Shanghai Daily (Chinese: 上海日报, Pinyin: Shànghǎi Rìbào) is an English language newspaper that was founded on October 1, 1999. It was published by Wenhui Xinmin United Press group and was the first local daily in English version in China. The influences of Shanghai Daily have expanded to all regions and cities in Yangtze River since the year 2005. It is regarded as the most influential foreign-language newspaper in well-developed regions in China. Major readers involve foreigners living in China, Chinese working for foreign enterprises, and tourists visiting China.

The development of Shanghai Daily was at an important period when the Chinese government developed its economy and actively participated in international affairs. 1999 was just two years before China became a member of the World Trade Organization. According to Connery,[1](2019) China was in a bad demand for support and cooperation with more countries, regions, and international organizations. To achieve this, promoting itself to the world was urgent. Shanghai Daily was established when it was needed to adopt English to target foreigners because English is the leading language of international discourse in the 21st century. It covers a wide range of news in order to show China and Shanghai comprehensively, involving geography, policies, business, economy, trading, entertainment, sports, society, and culture, among others. The newspaper aided the Chinese government in showing its foreign policy and civil sociey to the world and attracted foreign capital and entities to cooperate with China in economic, political, business, and non-government exchange. Shanghai Daily officially launched “ideal Shanghai”, a sub-brand that focuses on lifestyle information including dining, shopping, touring, and hotels in Shanghai and its surrounding cities (Endres, 2015).[2]

In the 2008 Asia media awards organized by IFRA (International Association of Newspapers and Media Business Technology), its official website won gold medal in the “best website of the year” award for its innovative ideas, original content, and excellent design. The front page, represented by the design of the Olympic torch, won a silver award for best design of front page. Shanghai Daily was the only mainland (excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) Chinese newspaper to receive the award.

Shanghai Daily launched its official platform on October 12, 2017, named SHINE, to cater to the increased demands of online reading and rapid development of digital media. This symbolized its transformation from a traditional newspaper to a new era modern digital media platform. The platform shine consists of two parts, the mobile app and the official website. The official website is characterized with its unique layout, which is a large headline picture showing the hottest news at the moment and a concise design for the readers to browse news with fewer clicks. The mobile app is a user-friendly interface designed to increase mobile reading trends. Both offer breaking news, in-depth stories, and insightful analysis about Shanghai as well as China. Its influences have reached the US, Canada, Russia, UK, and other nations. For now, China is not the largest user group. Shine's largest user group is in the US, occupying about 45 percent for all clicks in its official news website; it is available in both Chinese social media, such as WeChat and Weibo, as well as various international social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. It explains how fashion is on the lips of everyone in Shanghai and After Milan, Paris, London and New York, Shanghai is going to claim and candidate to become the oriental fashion capital. It gives an explanation on how Shanghai was started as a business port in 1843 and became one of the initial tones that got exposed to the western thoughts and fashion (Mersinkin, 2015).[4] It describes it as the first city to dare in trying something new. The newspaper goes on and introduces the modern Shanghai from the old one in terms of fashion. It elaborates more on the symbol of fashion in Shanghai by outlining more on Oipao which is a symbol that is used to display the women graceful manner. In the newspaper it is still described as the modern designer fashion icon therefore attracting many people to Shanghai.
