At the 2006 census, its population was 5,357 in 972 households, when it was the village of Shahrak-e Hamzeh.[4] The following census in 2011 counted 5,850 people in 1,217 households,[5] by which time the village had been elevated to the status of a city and renamed Hamzeh.[6] The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 6,091 people in 1,451 households.[2]

In 1359[clarification needed], with the beginning of the war between Iran and Iraq, some border residents from localities such as Rafi, Bostan, Hoveyzeh, Abadan and Khorramshahr were transferred to safe areas such as the village of Shahrak-e Hamzeh (now the city of Hamzeh). The city is 26 km from the city of Dezful. Its primary inhabitants were 100 percent Arab, but after some time, some Dezful residents have been living in areas of the city to escape Iraqi missile and air strikes.[citation needed]
