The early United States commemorative coins traditionally begins with the 1892 Columbian half dollar and extends through the 1954 Booker T. Washington issue[citation needed], although the first commemorative coin of the United States was issued in 1848.[1] The profits from the sale of commemorative coins was often used to fund a specific project. Commemorative coins were a money raising mechanism that provided an alternative to raising taxes.

NotesEdit

The 1848 CAL quarter eagle did not sell well with numismatists, and all unsold coins were placed into circulation. Because of this, some numismatists consider the 1848 CAL quarter eagle to be a circulation commemorative rather than a true commemorative.
