Ruma (Bengali: রুমা) is an upazila of Bandarban District in the Division of Chittagong, Bangladesh.[1]

Ruma is located at 22°03′00″N 92°25′00″E / 22.0500°N 92.4167°E / 22.0500; 92.4167. It has 5,917 households and a total area of 492.09 km2.[citation needed]

As of the 2011 Bangladeshi census, Ruma upazila had 5,917 households and a population of 29,098. 7,973 (27.40%) were under 10 years of age. Ruma had an average literacy rate of 28.90%, compared to the national average of 51.8%, and a sex ratio of 881 females per 1000 males. 363 (1.25%) of the population lived in urban areas.[2] The ethnic population was 26,503 (91.08%), of which Marma were 9,598, Mru 5,364 and Tripura 3,002.[3]

According to the 1991 Bangladesh census, Ruma had a population of 19,001. Males constituted 54.27% of the population, and females 45.73%. The population aged 18 or over was 10,144. Ruma had an average literacy rate of 27.8% (7+ years), compared to the national average of 32.4%.[4]

Ruma Upazila is divided into four union parishads: Ghalangya, Paindu, Remakri Pransa, and Ruma. The union parishads are subdivided into 15 mauzas and 225 villages.[2]
