B. topics edit

The portal needs a topics box, like f. ex. FP Portal:Australia has "Australia Topics". feydey 18:34, 4 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Created, with example topics: this will need some attention to get it decent though. Fram 19:25, 4 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've filled in some blanks. Some pages exist but they need proper redirects. Like the colours better now :-)

languages edit

French is not only spoken by wallons but also by 85% of brussels, so the number of 3.3 millions for french speakers is not correct. Jrenier 19:09, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Dutch is spoken by the 6 million people in Flanders to the north, French by the 3.3 million Walloons in the south. The capital, Brussels, is officially bilingual, while the majority of its residents speak French". I think ytour objections are adressed in this text (which comes straight from the article Belgium, by the way. The 3.3 million is only for the Walloons. But if people want to change this to "Dutch is spoken by 6 million people, mainly in Flanders in the north, French by 4 million people, mainly in Wallonia in the South", I don't mind. 81.83.210.119 19:25, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
It's too complicated to be an introduction, but I like more this from Belgium : "Straddling the cultural boundary between Germanic and Romance Europe, it is linguistically divided. Mainly two languages are spoken in Belgium: Dutch is spoken by 58% of the whole Belgian population, in Flanders to the north, that is to say by 6 million people ; French is spoken by 42% of the entire Belgian population, thus 4.2 million French-speaking people : 3.3 million people in the Walloon Region in the south and about 0.9 million people in Brussels out of 1 million inhabitants." Jrenier 19:32, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
No problem with that either. Just to say that the previous comment was by me as well, I was somehow logged out... Fram 19:40, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I have no problem with the general gist of the proposed change, except I notice the numbers don't match. For example if 4.2M people is 42% than 6M people cannot be 58% (it would have to be 60%, so together exceeding 100%), and the 100,000 Dutch speaking people in Brussels seem to be "lost". Using the numbers of january 2006 [1] I calculate 6.2M (almost 59%) Dutch speaking, 4.25M French speaking (40.5%) and 73K German speaking (0.7%) or do I miss something? BertK 22:58, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Oh, this assumes an allocation of 90/10% for French/Dutch in the Brussels region. BertK 23:01, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
59, 40.5 and 0.7 seems correct to me. Jrenier 09:24, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

missing stub link edit

It says Casimir Heymans is a stub but there is no such page...? Fethroesforia 16:32, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Belgium news edit

I'd like to transform the "Belgium news" section into something like the "In the news" on the New Zealand portal, so that we can mention events for which a Wikinews article hasn't (yet) been created (such as the jury's verdict in the Van Themsche trial, which is expected to be delivered this evening, or the resignation of Fientje Moerman). Are there any objections to that?--Ganchelkas 10:58, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Leuven/Louvain edit

Splitting the alumni up is a hard job already, but now we get this as well. OK, the two guys are both dead, but is calling them quislings not a bit over the top on the POV scale? And I also think that calling Vande Wiele a Quisling may actually give him more importance than he really had. Any ideas? Oh, and I have a nice compromise: putting "World war II collaborator" and linking to quisling, but how do people feel about that? Thanks for the input. --Paul Pieniezny (talk) 16:14, 18 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Commemorative euro coins ... edit

I am not sure where to add it, not even if it fits here. Can somebody look at Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Belgium) and check if there is any place that can be placed within this portal? Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 03:02, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Topics portal edit

I've created a topics template to match those of other countries. Please feel free to add more to it as I included all the topics I could find separate pages for.

Are there actually any notable islands in Belgium? I'm struggling to think of one. --David Edgar (talk) 09:35, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK edit

Portal:Belgium/Did you know currently shows a fairly arbitrary collection of facts about Belgium. In the better-quality portals, the DYK box shows a selection of facts that have appeared in the DYK section of the Main Page. There's a tool that can find these; there's a list of them in my sandbox (permalink). Would anyone object if I updated the Portal:Belgium/Did you know box to use these? -- John of Reading (talk) 08:20, 19 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

John, I don't think anyone could object. The current system is stop-gap and I for one would be very grateful if you could make the necessary changes! —Brigade Piron (talk) 10:27, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
