Welcome to the American Civil War portal talk page edit

Before posting on this page, please observe these basic guidelines so that discussion stays focused in the appropriate areas. Since each portal sub page has its own talk page and since these may not be immediately obvious to the user, I've created a talk map below in order to point all talk to correct locations.

This talk page is devoted to discussing portal box arrangement, what boxes should or should not appear, and what page formatting should apply. Please keep discussion on this page to that subject matter, or your talk may be moved to the correct page by portal maintainers.

If your post pertains to any of the content of any of the boxes, take that discussion to the portal talk listed below.

  1. Portal talk:American Civil War/box-header
  2. Portal talk:American Civil War/Intro
  3. Portal talk:American Civil War/Featured article
  4. Portal talk:American Civil War/Did you know
  5. Portal talk:American Civil War/This week in American Civil War history
  6. Portal talk:American Civil War/Selected biography
  7. Portal talk:American Civil War/Selected picture
  8. Portal talk:American Civil War/Selected article

  10. Portal talk:American Civil War/Things you can do
  11. Portal talk:American Civil War/Grand Parade of the States
  12. Portal talk:American Civil War/Queue

If your talk isn't related to any of the above, feel free to post boldly here. Welcome to this talk page and this portal. Let's try to fight out our controversies here (on these talk pages) so they don't have to read them over there (on the portal pages). 17:29, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

Note edit

I noticed that in the "Requested articles" section there is a request for an article on "Mexican-Americans in the Civil War". I would like to point out that there is no need for such an article since there is already an article titled Hispanics in the American Civil War which covers not only Mexican Americans, but other Hispanic groups who participated in said conflict as well. The article on question can be expanded. Tony the Marine (talk) 16:15, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for that info and the keen eyes. I've been on light wiki-duty this year and missed the welcome addition. Better title anyway. I'll make the change on the ACW Task Force's transcluded template. If you're interested I'd love some help updating this portal. It's surprisingly easy work. I've just been busy offwiki. BusterD (talk) 21:45, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Racist Remark? edit

When I was reading the article a sentence read "In many ways, the conflict's central issues – the enslavement of African-Americans, the role of constitutional federal government, and the rights of states – are still not completely resolved." Is it just me or did the sentence say that there is debate over whether African-Americans should be enslaved? We know that blacks are equal to whites, but this sounds racist, so I'm removing the part about African-Americans. McBenjamin (talk) 05:04, 1 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

You took the sentence out of context, I think. The sentence does question whether blacks should still be enslaved, but the sentence clearly relates to this being the question at the end of the war (hence the reference to Appomatox), and not "now". There is no racist implication, it merely suggests that as the war ended, equal rights for blacks were not in place, and some still believed slavery should be a legitimate practice. By taking you those few words, the sentence neglects to mention the one thing that sparked the tensions which led to war in the first place, and then places the entire blame on constitutional and state rights, which is clearly inaccurate. WP:CENSOR possibly applies here, we don't cut out something because it sounds racist, when the topic itself relates to racial tension, we simply word it neutrally. I don't find the sentence racist, I think your interpretation, quoted above, is inaccurate and that you took it for a contemporary view, rather than the post-war view. I have no objection to carefully restructuring the sentence with more clarity, but let's not obscure the truth to protect a group's feeling.. history is what it is, and does not mean we still feel the same today. CURRENTHOUR edit

I'm not convinced about using CURRENTHOUR for portal subpages. By default, the software caches the rendered pages and won't rebuild the page every hour - a reader will see the article for whatever the hour was when the portal page was last cached. The "Show new selections" link will rebuild the page, so that the reader will see the article for the current hour. But after that, the reader is stuck - clicking "Show new selections" again won't show another article until CURRENTHOUR changes. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:49, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
