Rail transport is an important mode of transport in India.

All main-line rail operations in India are handled by Indian Railways (IR), a state-owned organization of the Ministry of Railways. , the rail network comprises 121,407 km (75,439 mi) of track over a route of 67,368 km (41,861 mi) and 7,349 stations. It is the fourth-largest railway network in the world (after those of the United States, Russia and China). Forty nine percent of the routes are electrified with 25 KV AC electric traction while thirty-three percent of them are double or multi-tracked.

It is one of the busiest networks in the world, transporting 8.107 billion passengers and over 1.108 billion tonnes of freight annually, Indian Railways is the world's eighth largest employer, with more than 1.308 million employees as of March 2017. As of March 2017, IR's rolling stock consisted of 277,987 freight wagons, 70,937 passenger coaches and 11,452 locomotives. IR owns locomotive and coach-production facilities at several locations in India.

The urban rail transit systems across the country are operated independently of Indian Railways. There are currently 11 operational rapid transit (also called 'metro') systems in ten cities in India. As of November 2017, India has 425 kilometres (264 miles) of operational metro lines and 347 stations. A further 500+ km of lines are under construction.

The Mumbai Suburban Railway (Marathi: मुंबई उपनगरीय रेल्वे) system, part of the public transport system of Mumbai, is provided for by the state-run Indian Railways' two zonal Western Railways and Central Railways. The system carries more than 6.9 million commuters on a daily basis and constitutes more than half of the total daily passenger capacity of the Indian Railways itself. It has one of the highest passenger densities of any urban railway system in the world. The trains plying on its routes are commonly referred to as local trains or simply as locals by the general populace.

The Mumbai Suburban Railway, as well as Indian Railways, are an offshoot of the first passenger railway built by the British in India in April 1853, and is also the oldest railway system in Asia. The first train ran between Mumbai and Thane, a distance of 34 km. The Bombay Railway History Group has been striving to document railway heritage along this line.

Due to the geographical spread of the population and location of business areas, the rail network is the principal mode of mass transport in Mumbai. As Mumbai's population swelled from a heavy inflow of migrants in recent decades, frequent overcrowding has become a serious issue, and numerous safety concerns have been raised over the years. A metro system and a monorail system are under construction in Mumbai to ease the travelling conditions in the Suburban network.

Gatimaan Express

Gatimaan Express is a semi-high speed train that runs between Delhi and Agra. It operates at a maximum speed of 160 km/h (99 mph) and is currently the fastest train in India. The train takes 100 minutes to cover the 188 km (117 mi) journey from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantt railway stations with an average speed of 112 km/h (70 mph) from 1 April 2018. The train was launched on 5 April 2016 and completed its maiden journey between Nizamuddin and Agra Cantt within 100 minutes. The train has two Executive AC Chair Car and eight AC Chair Car coaches. The train is equipped with bio-toilets, fire alarms, GPS-based passenger information system and sliding doors. The train has train hostesses for service, similar to airlines and the passengers get access to free Wi-Fi and multimedia content.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus , formerly Victoria Terminus, and better known by its abbreviation CST, is a historic railway station in Mumbai which serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways.It is the first station in India, then called Bori Bunder. It is one of the busiest railway stations in India. It is the only railway station to be a UNESCO World Heritage. The station building was designed in the Victorian Gothic style of architecture, by Axel Herman and Frederick William Stevens. It was constructed by 1888, by Frederick William Stevens at a cost of Rs.16,14,000/-(then).

2019 in rail transport in India

  • July 20 – The government of Andra Pradesh announces that among the eight companies that submitted proposals, Larsen & Toubro is the preferred bidder for construction of the Hyderabad Metro in India, costing a proposed Indian Rupee symbol.svg122 billion. The state and federal governments will each finance 20% of the project while Larsen & Toubro will finance the remaining 60%. The project is expected to be completed in 2014. (Railway Gazette)
  • June 6 - Passengers of the Hazrat Nizamuddin-Visakhapatnam Samata Express had a narrow escape when its engine derailed near Arand railway station in Chhattisgarh, but no one was injured. Rail services through the track were affected for about five hours due to the derailment at an area between Arand and Bhimkhoj stations in Raipur section. The cause of derailment is yet to be ascertained, officials said.The Hindu
