P. S. Sreedharan Pillai

P. S. Sreedharan Pillai (born 1 December 1954) is an Indian politician, attorney, and author, who is currently serving as the 15th Governor of Mizoram.

Early lifeEdit

Pillai was born in Venmony panchayat in Alappuzha district, Kerala, India to V. G. Sukumaran Nair and Bhavani Amma. He graduated in Arts from N. S. S. College, Pandalam and he secured his Law Degree in the year 1978 from Government Law College, Calicut. Being an active participant in the Anti-Emergency Campaign as a student activist of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad he was elected as the state General Secretary of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in 1977. Being the college Magazine Editor at Government Law College, Calicut, he published his protest against the Emergency and the Indira Gandhi Government, which at the time generated much political talk.

Political careerEdit

Pillai started his political career through the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was a state secretary of the ABVP during his college days. He has served in many posts in the BJP, including Kozhikode district president, state secretary, and general secretary. He was elected as BJP State President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala from 2003 to 2006 and also served as the BJP Prabhari of Lakshadweep UT in 2004.[1] Under his leadership, in 2004, the National Democratic Alliance won two MP seats from Kerala (P. C. Thomas,Indian Federal Democratic Party) and Lakshadweep (P. Pookunhi Koya, Janata Dal (United)). In 2018, he was again appointed as the state President, preceding Kummanam Rajasekharan.[2] He was appointed Governor of Mizoram on 25 October 2019.[3]

Literary careerEdit

Sreedharan Pillai took to writing nearly four decades ago, publishing his first book in 1983. Developing into a widely acclaimed writer, he has published more than 121+ books.[4] Writing both in English and Malayalam, Pillai has spanned across multitudinous subjects and themes which include law, politics, literature, sociology, and culture. Pillai has often verbalized his heartfelt admiration to eminent public leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Syama Prasad Mukherjee, and Deendayal Upadhyaya, who irrespective of their political affiliations enlightened the masses on social and political issues by penning down their thoughts and experiences. Being a senior politician, he makes sure he walks the talk and has done so by writing over 121+ books over the years, 18 of which he completed during the recent coronavirus-induced lockdown.

Personal lifeEdit

Pillai married Advocate K. Rita at Kozhikode in 1984, who is a practicing lawyer at the District Court Kozhikode.[13] His son Arjun Sreedhar is a lawyer at the High Court of Kerala and started the profession as Junior to his father. His daughter-in-law Jipsa Arjun is a post-graduate in pediatric dentistry and is practicing at Calicut. His daughter Arya Arun is a post-graduate in Dental Science and is practicing in Cochin, while her husband Arun Krishna Dhan is also a lawyer in the High Court of Kerala and started his career as a junior to his father-in-law.[14]
