National Dong Hwa University

National Dong Hwa University (NDHU; Chinese: 國立東華大學; shortened as "東華大") is a national research university located in Hualien, Taiwan. Established in 1994, NDHU currently is a high potential research university and considered the most prestigious university in Eastern Taiwan, offering the 3rd widest range of disciplines among universities in Taiwan. Including the Sciences, Engineering, Environment, Law, Arts, Design, Social Sciences, Education Sciences, Marine Science, Music, and Business. The university consists of 8 colleges, 38 departments, 56 graduate institutes, and research centers.

NDHU enrolls approximately 10,000 undergraduate & graduate students, and over 1,000 international students pursuing degrees and joining exchange programs.

NDHU's main campus is located in upper-middle part of Hualien County, accommodating an area of 251 ha (0.97 sq mi). Shoufeng campus houses almost all colleges and research institutes except the College of Marine Science, which is located on the Pingtung campus.

In 2020, NDHU is ranked 5th in Taiwan among universities founded under 50 years, ranked 801–1000th in the world, and 195th in Asia by the 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.[1] Also, NDHU is ranked 251–260th in Asia by The QS Asia University Rankings[2]

The National Dong Hwa University was established in 1994 in Shoufeng, Hualien during the presidency of Mr. Democracy, Lee Teng-hui, the father of democracy of Taiwan. As the 1st university established after the full democratization of Taiwan, NDHU set the "Freedom, Democracy, Creativity, Excellence" as founding spirit to echo with this notable timing the university was established. The Shoufeng main campus of NDHU was designed by the master of postmodern architecture, Charles Moore, whom also was the Dean of Yale School of Architecture. The establishment of NDHU attracted many Taiwanese notable scholars working as professor, chair of department, vice-chancellor in the universities in United States, such as Yang Mu, Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature at University of Washington, and Mu Zong-Can, the vice-chancellor of California State University, Los Angeles.

In 2005, NDHU cooperated with National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium (NMMBA), an remarkable institution dedicated to public education and research of marine biology including survey, collection, preservation and study of marine organisms around Taiwan, to jointly establish the College of Marine Science and Graduate Institute of Marine Biology in Kenting National Park, Checheng, Pingtung.

National Hualien University of Education (1947-2008)Edit

The National Hualien University of Education (Hua-Shih; 花師) was established in 1947 in Hualien City, Hualien as Taiwan Hualien Junior Normal College. In 1949, Hua-Shih established Affiliated Primary School of Taiwan National Hualien Junior Normal College to provide a training ground for the College's students. Prior to the merge with NDHU, Hua-Shih was one of leading and most prestigious institutions in teacher's education in Taiwan. It has cultivated many notable alumni, many of whom are excellent educators teaching in Taiwan's leading institutions, such as Tsai Ping-kun, Principal of Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School and Taichung Municipal Taichung First Senior High School, and Tang Chih-Min, the Founding Principal of Affiliated Senior High School of National Chengchi University.

National Dong Hwa UniversityEdit

In 2008, with 2.5 billion support from Ministry of Education, National Dong Hwa University merged with the National Hualien University of Education into the university with 3rd widest range of disciplines in Taiwan, and renamed the newly-integrated College of Education into Hua-Shih College of Education in memory of sixty-year dedication of education by National Hualien University of Education. The fully-integrated NDHU consolidated its reputation in many disciplines and prestige in Eastern Taiwan, and reflected in its rankings and other accolades. [3][4]

National Dong Hwa University's campuses are distinctive for their nature-based setting. The Shoufeng main campus is designed by Charles Moore, the Dean of Yale School of Architecture, with more than 251 hectares(620 acres), which is the largest flat land campus in Taiwan and also famous for distinctive architecture setting.

 

Shoufeng CampusEdit

The Shoufeng campus is the main campus located in Shoufeng Township in the Papaya Creek Delta region of Hualien County. The campus sits just north of the Tropic of Cancer about 35 kilometers south of Taroko National Park and 15 kilometers south of Hualien City. Located on an alluvial plain ringed by mountains and East Rift Valley, the campus is known for its distinctive architecture and natural setting.[5] Occupying over 251 hectares (620 acres), the Shoufeng campus is Taiwan's largest flat land university site.[6]

NDHU's College of Marine Biology is based at the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium (NMMBA) in Chechung township in Pingtung County, standing in Kenting National Park and facing the Taiwan Strait in the west. The National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium is a well-known marine museum for academic research and marine education in Taiwan.[8]

National Dong Hwa University is considered one of top research impact institutions of Taiwan. In 2020, according to CNCI Index a research impact evaluation undertaken by Ministry of Education (MOE), NDHU is ranked 7th greatest research impact university in Taiwan. According to Times Higher Education, NDHU holds largest research impact in Computer Science (1st Citations in Taiwan, 149th in the world), and Engineering (3rd Citations in Taiwan). In 2020, NDHU Master’s Program in Ethnic Relations and Cultures is also selected as Fulbright Program, which is considered to be one of the most widely recognized and prestigious scholarships in the world.[11][12][13][14][15]
