The Mitsubishi 4M4 engine is a range of four-cylinder diesel piston engines from Mitsubishi Motors, first introduced in the second generation of their Montero/Pajero/Shogun SUVs. They superseded the previous 4D5 engine family, although they did not replace them.

TurbochargerThe 4M40 used the TD04 trubo from 1994 to 1997, it was replaced by the TF305 in 1998 and was used for 2 years. The 4M41 used the TF305 from 1999 to 2007 and was replaced later with the IHIRHV5. Only the IHIRHV5 turbo was a Variable Geometry type turbo on the 4M41. Both the 4M40T and 4M41 Were Intercooled .

Originally available only as a 2.8 L (2,835 cc) intercooled turbo, detail improvements in 1996 and a larger 3.2–litre option in 1999 served to improve power, torque, fuel economy and emissions.
