List of countries with McDonald's restaurants

This is a list of countries with McDonald's restaurants. McDonald's is the largest chain of fast-food restaurants in the world,[1] with more than 36,000 outlets worldwide.[2] The majority of McDonald's outlets outside of the United States are franchises.

Countries with current and former McDonald's locations

The biggest temporary McDonald's restaurant in the world was opened during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which had 3,000 square metres (32,000 sq ft).[3][4][5][6] The biggest still standing is the World's Largest Entertainment McDonald's. The northernmost McDonald's restaurant in the world is located in Rovaniemi, Finland (after the restaurant in Murmansk, Russia was closed in 2022)[7] and the southernmost in the world is located in Invercargill, New Zealand.[8]

The list of countries follows the company's own calculation and contains several non-sovereign territories.

HistoryEdit

The first McDonald's restaurant was opened in 1940 by Dick and Mac McDonald. However, on 15 April 1955, Ray Kroc launched the first McDonald's in Des Plaines, Illinois, featuring a ten-item menu built around a 15-cent hamburger.

Since that time, McDonald's has operated more than 40,000 restaurants worldwide, which has increased over 16 years.[9]

January 31, 1990 March 14, 2022 First restaurant was opened in Pushkin Square, Moscow in 1990. It was the first outlet in the Soviet Union itself, which then disintegrated 23 months after its opening. In 2022, McDonald's suspended its restaurant operations in Russia due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in March. McDonald's later decided that they will shut down the entire Russian operations permanently citing geopolitical concern. Before its closure, McDonald's had opened 850 restaurants in Russia.[60] The brand relaunched on June 12, 2022 as 'Vkusno & tochka' (Вкусно и точка, Tasty and that's it) by local franchisee Alexander Govor, who acquired the operations in May from McDonald's. Govor had opened 25 McDonald's restaurants in the country. While the menu and equipment remains the same, most of the trademarks were dropped.[61][62] It is expected McDonald's will have an option to reacquire the 850 restaurants in 15 years.[63]
10   Belarus December 10, 1996 November 27, 2022 First McDonald's in a non-Baltic former Soviet republic (not including Russia). The company claimed this as McDonald's "100th country" although this calculation included many non-sovereign territories. McDonald's would close its operation in the country in November 2022 due to local supplies issues. The remaining 25 restaurants operating in the country will be replaced by Russian McDonald's substitute 'Vkusno & tochka' (Вкусно и точка, Tasty and that's it) which was opened after McDonald's left Russia due to Russian invasion of Ukraine[64]
11   Bosnia and Herzegovina July 20, 2011 December 31, 2022 Closed "until further notice" due to the license for operating in Bosnia and Herzegovina being taken away.[65]
12   Kazakhstan March 8, 2016 January 5, 2023 Closed due to supply restrictions.[66]
