  3. ^ Peabody had been the teacher preparation branch of the former University of Nashville until 1889 when it was released to operate independently. The school was later moved to land adjacent to Vanderbilt in hopes of increased cooperation. The two schools merged under the Vanderbilt name in 1979.
  4. ^ Also known as Searcy Female, Galloway Women's College was absorbed by Hendrix College in 1933.
