Kankaraš (Montenegrin, Serbian Cyrillic: Канкараш) is a Serbo-Croatian surname found mostly in Montenegro. Its bearers are either Orthodox Christian or Muslim. There is an old Kankaraš brotherhood (pl. Kankaraši) of the Drobnjaci tribe around Golija near Nikšić (in northwestern Montenegro). A part of the Kankaraši settled Plovdiv, Bulgaria and changed their surname to Černogorski ("Montenegrin"). The Muslim Kankaraš family in Pljevlja hail from Foča, which they left following the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1878); they are not related to the Kankaraš family in the town.[1] The name is a nickname, derived from Turkish, meaning "large black eyebrows".[1] At least seven individuals with the surname died in the Holocaust in Croatia.[2]

Муслимани у Пљевљима ... 63. Канкарши су пореклом из Фоче. Отуда су дошли 1878. године кад су аустроугарске трупе заузеле Босну и Херцеговину. Дошла су три брата: Авдо (1857), Салих и Бећир. Не зна се како је било име њиховом оцу, али је у Фочи био веома богат. Бавио се трговином. Из Фоче су са њима дошли и други богати Фочани: Кулосмановићи, Хаџипирићи, Куртовићи, Телећевићи, Татарагићи, Трхуљи и др. Некада су се у Фочи другачије презивали, али када им је неки предак дошао пред турског великодостојника, рекао му је тај: „Канкакаш", што на турском значи да има велике црне обрве. Касније их по томе прозваше Канкараши. Дошавши у Пљевља купили су велики плац изнад Милет баште и ту су постепено направили три велике куће. Авдо се и даље бавио трговином, а друга два брата занатима. Нису им род Канкараши у граду.

Ono što posebno ohrabruje je činjenica da u zoni zaštite poslednjih meseci nije bilo nikakvih ispada albanskih nacionalista i separatista. Ranije se događalo da upadnu sa Kosmeta, pokradu stoku ili poseku drva i onda se ponovo prebacuju na područje Kosmeta. Najteži incident se dogodio lane u rejonu sela Marovca kada je ubijen Milivoje Kankaraš, a njegova supruga teško ranjena, ali je preživela.

In one of the latest reported attacks in the buffer zone, a candidate in a coalition with Serbia's ruling Socialist Party was abducted and shot dead by five ethnic Albanians on Aug. 28, the party said in a statement. The candidate, Milivoje Kankaras, and his wife were kidnapped from their home in Serbia, near the Kosovo border, and forced onto a tractor. As they approached the village of Velja Glava, the abductors threw the couple off the tractor and opened fire, killing Kankaras and seriously wounding his wife, the party statement said.
