TranslationEdit

This Sanskrit verse can be translated as "Mother and motherland are superior to Heaven."

OriginEdit

The verse is claimed to be from the great Hindu Epic Ramayana in Sanskrit composed by Adi Kavi (Primordial Poet) sage Valmiki. However, according to some leftist leaning historians and historians of colonial era, this shloka was never there in the original version of Ramayana(No One could find the "original version" of Ramayana till date).[1]

Different versions of the shloka are mostly edited & hyped by the Marxist & Colonial historians as follows.

मित्राणि धन धान्यानि प्रजानां सम्मतानिव |

जननी जन्म भूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी ||

Sage Bharadwaja said, "The friends, the riches and the grains are highly honoured in this world. Mother and mother-land are far superior to even the heaven."

[ This shloka is seen in the edition published by Hindi Prachara Press, Madras in 1930 by T.R. Krishna chary, Editor and T. R. Vemkoba chary the publisher. ][2]

Or

अपि स्वर्णमयी लङ्का न मे लक्ष्मण रोचते |

जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी ||

"Lakshmana, even this golden Lanka does not appeal to me, mother and motherland is greater than heaven."

Source of this shloka is not known and is only a folklore.[3]
