The programme is based around The Squirrel Club, an activity club for children. The children take part in all kinds of activities, have adventures and earn badges for their accomplishments.

Hey Duggee is airing its third series. It was first shown in December 2014. BBC and Studio AKA produced a second series in early 2016,[2] with the first episode airing in the United Kingdom on 26 September 2016. A third series was commissioned in October 2017,[3] with the first episode due to be broadcast in Autumn 2018, but was pushed back to 4 March 2019. The final episode, "The A Cappella Badge" was aired on 26 June 2020.

ProductionEdit

The programme is animated using the computer program Flash, with a minimalist style using filled shapes with no outlines, and only effects that Flash is capable of,[4] and only the Duggee character uses any gradients. The frog character is a plain green triangle.

The production team consists of around 16 in-house animators, with six to eight scriptwriters.[4]

FormatEdit

Every episode starts by showing what one of the Squirrels is doing at their houses. They are interrupted by the Narrator saying "[Name], isn't it time for ...?", to which they gasp and shout "DUGGEE!". During the opening theme, they run out of their house to travel to Duggee's clubhouse with their parents in vehicles. Alexander calls Duggee's name, "DUGGEE!!!" . Duggee exits the clubhouse with a Woof and a dance.

Other characters from the show can be briefly seen. The Squirrels hug their parents, run to Duggee, and the series' logo is shown. This is followed by the title card, which is an image of the badge that the Squirrels will earn this episode.

Usually each story will start with the Narrator saying "Hello Squirrels! I wonder what Duggee has planned for you today?", at which point the Squirrels will go and find out, calling out "Hey Duggee! Whatcha doing?" The ensuing activity will inevitably be connected to the episode's badge, often introduced by the Narrator saying "Duggee even has his [activity] badge!" while Duggee points at his shirt and we see a close up of the badge.

In each episode, a situation will present itself that can be solved by learning a new skill. When the skill has been learned, and the situation resolved, the Squirrels receive one of Duggee's badges. After their parents have arrived to pick the students up, the narrator states "Just time for one more thing...". Each episode ends with a Duggee Hug, where all the Squirrels hug Duggee at once and chorus "Duggee Hug". Then the Squirrels return to their parents with the badge they have earned.

The final scene of each episode has the Narrator saying "Well, that was fun, wasn't it, Duggee?" This is followed by something amusing or strange happening that is related to the events of the episode. If it is something that makes Duggee laugh, the Narrator might also laugh and say "Oh, do stop it Duggee". The end credits roll which usually features Duggee sleeping in his kennel, only to be woken up by the Squirrels yelling, "Hey Duggee!" at the end of the ending theme.

CharactersEdit

MainEdit

  • Narrator (Alexander Armstrong) - the Narrator, who talks to Duggee and the Squirrels. [5] He sometimes 'translates' Duggee's 'woof's for the benefit of the audience.
  • Duggee (Sander Jones) – A friendly big brown dog - the leader of the Squirrel Club. Unlike the children, he does not speak and only communicates via the onomatopoeic "Woof". In spite of this, everybody understands him perfectly.
  • Betty (Jasmine Bartholomew) – a purple octopus who is intelligent, talkative and a lover of reading and science.
  • Norrie (Poppie Boyes series 1-2, Bella Green series 3-present) – a sweet-natured and curious mouse who enjoys singing and dancing.
  • Roly (Leo Templer series 1, Dexter Varrall series 2-present) – An enthusiastic, loud and hyperactive hippo.
  • Tag (Alfie Sanderson Series 1-2, Ollie Chequer Series 3 – present) – A gentle and male rhino who always seems to be tripping over his own feet and bumps his knee in The First Aid Badge.
  • Happy (Duke Davis) – A tall, easy-going crocodile whose favourite thing is splashing in water. Happy is adopted,[6] and his adoptive parents are elephants.

RecurringEdit

Sander Jones as

  • Enid – Duggee's pet cat
  • The Rabbits. They live in the field near the clubhouse and all sound similar like 1960's hippies, apart from one who speaks French.

Phillip Warner as

  • Naughty Monkey - A monkey who loves to cause chaos.
  • King Tiger - local royalty whose favourite entertainment is the "jelly-belly dancers".
  • The Chickens - live in the hen-house and enjoy watching episodes of a Spanish hospital-drama

Grant Orchard as

  • The Mice – A gang of three trouble-making mice styled like a 50's biker gang; they usually leave the scene with the phrase "Let's bounce".
  • Whooooo - the Shamanistic Owl
  • Mole - a short-sighted animal who has dreams of being a stunt-mole.

Adam Longworth as

  • Lord Fingal of Skye Castle – A Scottish Terrier with a Scottish accent and a kilt.
  • Tino the Artistic Mouse – A perfectionist mouse whom Roly describes as grumpy.
  • Hedgley – An African-American accented hedgehog.

  • Eugene – an anxious chipmunk involved in leading various theatrical events.

  • Chew Chew the Panda- A confectionery-loving panda.

Morgana Robinson as

  • Katarina the Flamingo – the lead swimmer of a synchronised swimming team.

The "Stick Song" premiered in the series 2 episode, Hey Duggee: The Stick Badge, which was first broadcast in the UK on 7 December 2017. Duggee and the Squirrels are making a campfire when Roly discovers one of his sticks can talk. The talking stick begins to chant the word "stick!" repeatedly. The chant is set to dance music and the stick sings and dances to the beat.

To date, the "Stick Song" has been viewed more than 6.5 million times on YouTube.[10] The track has been featured on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Newsnight.[11] There is a heavy metal cover version[12] and a special version of the song was done for the 2018 FIFA World Cup called "Kick! ReceptionEdit

Stuart Heritage, writing in The Guardian, described the series as being "peerless."[15] Elements of the London Fire Brigade (LFB) complained on social media about "The Dressing-Up Badge". In the episode, Roly dresses up as a firefighter, but is described as being a fireman, which the LFB described as being "outdated" and [that] the term "‘Firefighter’ is the preferred respectful, inclusive, non-sexist, non-gendered term that should be being widely used by all media but especially the BBC [sic].[16]

CuriositiesEdit

  • Betty is considered the most intelligent character of Hey Duggee. Among the various abilities involving her intelligence, she is fluent in Chinese, as shown in the episode "The Spider Badge" (Given that Betty and her friends are of school age, it is possible that she has a super high i.q.). She also proves to be an environmental activist in the episode The Maze Badge (in it she says that several objects could be reused by someone, she tells Tag twice not to call it rubbish.
  • Hey Duggee addresses topics previously considered taboo in children's shows such as Homosexuality (in the figure of the couple of crabs John Crab and Nigel) and themes involving several types of family (In the figure of Happy, the crocodile, one of the protagonists of the series, one of the Squirrels and that is adopted and is adoptive son of elephant parents).
  • This series has several characters that came from other countries, such as Hedgley who has an African-American accent and who (possibly) came from the United States of America or Canada (Note: The African-American Accent or African-American Vernacular English is spoken by both African-Americans and Black Canadians, so it is possible that he is American or Canadian and has come from the United States of America or Canada), Lord Fingal of Skye Castle, who is Scottish one of the Rabbits, who is French and come from France. These characters in question are the representation of Modern immigration to the United Kingdom.
  • In the original development of the show, the central character was going to be called 'Chop Chop' rather than Duggee.[19]
  • There were originally going to be six members of the squirrel club instead of five - the sixth character can still be seen as the bus driver who brings Tag and his mother to squirrel club.[19]
