Heteroconger obscurus, the obscure garden eel,[3] is an eel in the family Congridae (conger/garden eels).[4] It was described by Wolfgang Klausewitz and Irenäus Eibl-Eibesfeldt in 1959, originally under the genus Xarifania.[5] It is a marine, tropical eel which is known from the eastern Indian Ocean, including the Nicobar Islands in India, and Andaman Island. It is known to dwell at a maximum depth of 15 m (49 ft), and inhabits silty sediments. Males can reach a maximum total length of 33.6 cm (13.2 in; 1.10 ft).[4]
