History and profileEdit

Established in 1955, Hawaii Business is the longest-running regional business magazine in America. The content focuses on the issues affecting Hawai’i’s economy and businesses, including jobs, profit and loss, education, housing, and much more. Hawaii Business serves readers by providing information that helps their companies succeed and helps people advance their careers.

Hawaii Business Magazine is not a conventional business magazine: They regularly publish stories on education, climate change, affordable housing, water pollution, child care and other important topics not often found in a business publication.

The main focus of Hawaii Business Magazine is original reporting, including some aggregation for email newsletters. The vast majority of content on the website and in the print publication is original and often time specific as it relates to the current business environment for the state of Hawai’i and events that affect it.

In 2018, Hawaii Business was named Best Magazine Overall by the Alliance of Area Business Publications (AABP), beating perennial winners based in much larger markets such as Dallas and Florida. They are a business to business publication that covers the whole state of Hawai’i, so the target audience is owners, managers and professionals at local businesses of all sizes, plus C-suite leaders, investors, potential entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders and public officials interested in local businesses and businesspeople.

The readers are educated and affluent: 66% men and 34% women, with an average age of 50. The most recent CVC audit (2016-17) estimates the monthly print readership at 66,834 with 34,696 monthly web users, 63,688 total social media followers, 21,000 daily newsletter subscribers and over 4,000 event attendees annually.

Among its signature issues are the Best Places to Work (April), Hawaii Business Top 250, ranking Hawaii's largest companies (August); the Hawaii Business Black Book, profiling many senior executives of the Top 250 companies (December); 20 For The Next 20 (March) and Top 100 Realtors (June).
