Summary

Description
English: M. de Klerk. Woningbouw Spaarndammerplantsoen, Amsterdam, 1917.

Collectie NAi, KLER 1429

‘Palaces for the workers’ is how these homes were known. The residential blocks by De Klerk are icons of Dutch public housing and the Amsterdam School. Sculptural forms lend cohesion and elegance to this residential quarter for the lowest income groups. The public housing tradition in the Netherlands emerged in the early 20th century, heralding a period of intense government intervention in social housing development. The unique alliance between government, private housing corporations and architects spawned new and surprising solutions and building typologies.
