X H I S Hofpital was founded by BartholomewMofle, Surgeon and Licentiate in Midwifery,who, being moved by the fufferings of the poorWomen of this City, at the time of their lying-in, took a Houfe in Georges-lane, and opened itthe 25th of March 17455 for their reception,fupporting it at his own expence, until the appa-rent ufefulnefs of it, induced feveral well-difpofedperfons to encourage the undertaking, by be-nefactions, and yearly fubfcriptions. THE LYING-IN-HOSPITAL. 63 for a polite place of amufement, which is juftlyadmired for its many beauties. On the 24th of May 1751, (O. S.) the foun-dation ftone was laid by the Right Hon. ThomasTaylor, then Lord Mayor of the City of Dub-lin. Doctor MofTe continued to carry on thebuilding, and raifed money for that purpofe byLottery Schemes, and on his own credit, untilhe had expended thereon above 8000/. but inthe year 1754 failing in a Scheme, which heexpected would have enabled him to completethe building, he petitioned the Houfe of Com-mons in 1755 > a grant was in confequencemade of 6000/. which enabled him to proceedin his undertaking until the Seilion following;,when a further fum of 6000/. was granted forfmifning the Hofpital, and 2000/. for the Doc-tors own ufe, as a reward for his fervices. Inthe year 1756, he obtained a Charter from hislate Majefty, George II. incorporating a num-ber of Noblemen and Gentlemen as guardians,and appointing himfelf Mafter of the Hofpitalduring
