Summary

Description

This diagram illustrates a rotating star as viewed from the Earth. The equatorial rotation is ve and the inclination of the polar axis relative to the line of sight from the Earth is given by i. Thus the radial velocity as viewed from Earth is given by ve sin i. (The angle between the equator and the line of sight is π/2 - i, but cos( π/2 - i ) = sin( i ) .)

The illustration was made by the contributor using Paint Shop Pro version 8.
