Summary

Description
English: Tombstone of Flavinus, Roman Standard Bearer, Hexham Abbey 'Flavinus rides in triumph over his barbarian adversary on the tall sandstone slab that now stands in front of a blocked doorway at the foot of the Night Stair in Hexham Abbey. Flavinus died towards the end of the first century, aged 25, after seven years of military service. The slab probably once stood in the military cemetery near the fort of Coria (near Corbridge). It seems odd that so massive and decorative a monument should have been brought from over three miles away to serve simply as building stone: originally (in the 12th century) the slab was laid face upwards in the foundations of the east range of the cloister and was (re)discovered in 1881.'
