| Description |
English: The site of Bedd Branwen The Welsh Mabinogion sagas have associated this Bronze Age burial site with the grave of Branwen (Bedd Branwen), the daughter of Llyr (King Lear of Shakespeare fame). Having suffered years of abuse at the hands of her Irish husband, Matholwch, the High King of Ireland, she died of a broken heart and was brought by boat to be buried on the banks of the Alaw. The tomb, however, is much older than the mythical age of the Mabinogion and dates from about 4000 years ago. It, like Branwen, suffered abuse, being dismantled by a local farmer around 1813. Later excavations at the site led to the finding of a number of cremation vessels. The site is on private land, with no public access, but can be viewed at a distance from public footpaths. |
