Other accounts affirm that the disjunc-tion of Renfrew from Lanarkshire did not take placetill the reign of James II. But whatever was thedate of that disjunction, Lanarkshire, in its dimin-ished extent, continued to form two wards till themiddle of the last century; and then, in consequenceof the increase of its population, it was divided intothree wards, Upper, Middle, and Lower. Lanarkcontinued to be the political capital of the upperward; Hamilton was constituted the political capi-tal of the middle ward; and Glasgow was substitutedfor Rutherglen as the political capital of the lowerward.
