English: Watercolour by Ensign Bethune Donald Grant, 35th Bengal Light Infantry, 1845 (c).

Formerly the 2nd Regiment of Skinner's Horse, the 4th Irregular Cavalry, took part in the 1st Afghan War (1839-1842) and Gwalior Campaign (1843) before serving during the 1st Sikh War (1845-1846) where they took part in all the major engagements including the battles of Mudki, Ferozeshah and Aliwal.

Bethune Donald Grant (1827-1854) was the son of a surgeon, John Grant and Elizabeth Nicholson Agnes Hayes. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the 35th Bengal Native Infantry. He died in Agra on 30 November 1854.
