Description Detail from a carving in contemporary style of the ancestor Te Au-o-te-whenua, Kawerau-a-Maki tribe, Auckland area, New Zealand. Carving at the Arataki Visitor Centre, Waitakere Ranges, Auckland. Te Au-o-te-whenua was the great-grandson of Maki, the founder of the tribe, and he controlled the land from Muriwai to the Manukau Harbour. Carving date late 20th century.
