English: Royal Air Force Bomber Command, 1939-1941.
The damaged port-side fuselage of Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mark V, P5005 'DY-N', of No. 102 Squadron RAF, after returning from a bombing raid to the Ruhr on the night of 12/13 November 1940. While trying to locate Cologne marshalling yards, the aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire, detonating a flare which, in turn, blew open a 15-foot section of the fuselage. Despite this damage, the pilot, Flying Officer G L Cheshire, managed to fly the aircraft and crew safely back to base at Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire. for which he was awarded the DSO.
Français : Le fuselage d'un Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mark V, P5005 'DY-N', appartenant à l'escadron n° 102 de la RAF, au retour d'un bombardement sur la Ruhr, dans la nuit du 12 au 13 novembre 1940. En dépit des dommages causés par la DCA allemande, le pilote Cheshire réussit à ramener l'appareil et son équipage à la base de Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire. Il reçut pour cela la décoration du Distinguished Service Order (DSO).
