Summary

Description
English: This is the west end of Pall Mall in February 1944 showing bomb damage inflicted by the German 'Operation Steinbock' which Londoners called 'The Little Blitz' or 'The Baby Blitz'. The night time bombing raids began in January and ended in April and were in retaliation for the saturation bombing of Germany. Damage was caused to The Alliance Assurance Company's building on the left which dates from 1882 and was designed by the architect of New Scotland Yard, Richard Norman Shaw. The building just along from the Alliance Assurance building is No. 61 Pall Mall which since 1897 had been the premises of the Hardy's fishing tackle shop. The photographer is standing with his back to St. James's Palace.
