In honour of the men of this parish who fought and in ever grateful remembrance of those who gave their lives for God and King, for Right, for Freedom and for Peace in the Great War 1949-1918

BLACKER, Richard, Private 23878, 10th East Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 30th May 1918. He was the son of Thomas and Harriet Jane of North Cave. In 1911 he was an apprentice boot maker. He was also the husband of Kitty of South Cave, Yorkshire and he is buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension, No1, Somme, France. Some notes from what is left of his Army Record. He enlisted on the 29th May 1916 aged 22 years and 9 months. He gave his address as Burnthill Lane, Sussex and occupation was Boot maker. He married Frances Kathleen Noverley on the 21st July 1914 at North Cave parish church and at this time he and his wife were living at Church Street, South Cave, Yorkshire. He was posted to France on the 20th December 1916 arriving at Etaples, France. Wounded with gun shot wounds to the right leg, thigh, face, and hands, admitted to 93rd Field Ambulance at Doullens and transferred to 3rd Canadian Stationary Field Hospital where his died of his injuries the next day, 30th.

BLANCHARD, George. It may be this soldier. Private 35968, George William Blanchard, 2/4th King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, formerly 38193, East Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action 30th July 1918. He was born at Holme in Spalding, Yorkshire and was the son of George W and Jessie of 30, Hood Street, Hull and husband of Gertrude of Blucher Lane, Beckside, Beverley, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France

BLANCHARD, Harold, Driver 755521, “C” Battery, 233rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, Territorial Force died of wounds 13th May 1918 aged 26. In 1901 he was visiting his grandmother, Annie Blanchard (Widowed) of Nordham Square, North Cave. Native of North Cave. Buried at St Riquier British Cemetery, Somme, France

COATES, William Robert, Private 907797, 5th Canadian Infantry, Saskatchewan Regiment. He enlisted on the 16th April 1916 at Regina Saskatchewan, Canada and he gave his occupation as a farmer. He was born 7th October 1890 at North Cave and was killed in action on the 9th April 1917 aged 26. He was the son of Arthur and Elizabeth of Westgate, North cave, Yorkshire. He is buried at Nine Elms Military Cemetery, Thelus, Pas de Calais, France

COULTOUS, Francis Frederick (known as Fred), Private 36927, 1/4th Essex Regiment, died 28th November 1918 aged 28. He was the son of Frederick and Emma of “Rosedene”, Scalhy, Gilberdyke, Yorkshire. Native of North Cave, Yorkshire. In 1911 his parents were living at North Cave . He is buried at Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt

CRISPIN, William, Private 28504, 10th East Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action 1st August 1918 aged 26. In 1911 He was living with his parents, George and Elizabeth and his siblings at West Gate, North Cave, East Yorkshire working as a farm waggoner. He is buried at Le Grand Hasard Military Cemetery, Morbecque, Nord France. Some notes from what is left of his Army record. He enlisted on the 26th May 1913 and was mobilised on the 5th August 1914. He gave his occupation as a Schooler of horses and gave his age as 22 years. His married sister Dorothy Hatfield of 145 Park Road, Hull was his next of kin and she received his memorial scroll. On the 22nd December 1916 he embarked Folkstone for Boulogne and disembarked the same day. He joined his unit 10th East Yorkshire Regiment in the field at Etaples, France. The 1st August 1918 he was killed in action and buried at the above stated cemetery.

CURTIS, Tom. It may be this person. Squadron Quartermaster 4166, Thomas Marriott Curtis, 9th Queen’s Royal Lancers, died 29th September 1914 aged 39. He was the husband of Mary Ellen of 2, Salem Place, Beverley, Yorkshire. He is buried in Longueval Communal Cemetery, Aisne, France

DUNNING, William, Second Engineer, Mercantile Marine on S.S. “Cavallo” (Hull) On February 1st, 1918, on a voyage from Liverpool & Swansea to Odda with a cargo of coal and tinplate, was sunk by the German submarine U-46 Northwest of Trevose Head, he was aged 50 years old. He was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Dunning and husband of Mary Jane Dunning (nee Chapman), of Church Street, North Cave, East Yorkshire. Born at Hull. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London

FRANKISH, William, Private 3396, 1/4th Northumberland Fusiliers, died of wounds 30th October 1916 aged 23. He was the son of Aaron and Sarah Ann of Mill House, North Cave, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was working as an assistant miller to his father. He is buried at Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France

GREENWOOD, Cornelius Pearson, Private 13/776, 13th East Yorkshire Regiment, died 13th November 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France Some notes from what is left of his Army record. He joined the army on the 24th November 1914 aged 24 years and 90 days. He was the son of Cornelius of Ash Grove Hull and husband of Gertrude Mary of 12, Lanack Street, Hull, Yorkshire and his occupation was a bricklayer’s labourer. On of his sisters, Muriel was born at North Cave. He embarked from Devonport for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 1st December 1915 and disembarked at Port Said on the 29th December 1915. He then Embarked Port Said on the 29th February 1916 for France. On the 13th November 1916 he was reported missing in action.

HEIGHT, Arthur Ernest, Private 35897, 25th Tyneside Irish, Northumberland Fusiliers died 12th October 1917 aged 20. He was the son of John and Annie Maria of Manor Farm, Shiptonthorpe, Yorkshire. Native of North Cave, Yorkshire. He is buried in Solferino Farm Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.

HOLBORN, James Edward, Lance Corporal, R/20346, 21st King’s Royal Rifle Corps, killed in action 17th September 1916. Born in Hull and lived in North Cave, Yorkshire

KIRK, Arthur, 2nd Lieutenant, 4th East Yorkshire Regiment died 28th June 1918 aged 30. He was the son of William and Betsy Helen of Chestnut Villa, North Cave, Yorkshire. He is buried at Aval Wood Military Cemetery, Vieux-Berquin, Nord France

LEE, Frank, Private 51654, 21st Manchester Regiment, formerly 38877, Durham Light Infantry killed in action 27th October 1917. Born at North Cave, enlisted at Hull and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West Vlaanderen, Belgium

LEE, Robert Harold, Private 27255, 46th Company Labour Corps, formerly 34833, Lincolnshire Regiment. H died of wounds 25th October 1917. Born at North Cave and lived at Newington Yorkshire. He was the son of Robert William and Hannah Mary Lee, of North Cave, East Yorkshire and husband of Amy Marwood (formerly Lee), of 23, Zetland Street, St. George's Road, Hull. he served 18 years with the Hud City Trams. He is buried at the Menin Road South Military Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium

OXTOBY, John William, Private 17/448, 17th Northumberkand Fusiliers died 15th July 1916 aged 23. He was the son of William and Edith A of North Cliffe, Hotham, Yorkshire. He was born in Market Weighton, Yorkshire. He is buried in Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France

REDFERN, Wilfrid, Captain, 3rd attached to the 7th East Yorkshire Regiment died 22nd March 1918 aged 31. he was the son of Walter George and Edith of Goathland, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was living with his parents at North Cave, Yorkshire and his occupation was a business assistant. He is buried at Beaulencourt British Cemetery, Ligny-Thilloy, Pas de Calais, France

ROBINSON, Albert. It may be this soldier Private 22747, Francis Albert Robinson, 7th East Yorkshire Regiment died on the 21st December 1916 aged 27. He was the son of Robert and Mary Robinson and husband of Emma Butters formerly Robinson , of 4, Beckside, Beverley, Yorks. Native of Kilpin, Howden, near Goole, Yorks. He is buried at Dive Copse British Cemetery, Sailly-Le-Sec, Somme, France. Some notes from what is left of his Army record. He joined up on the 10th December 1915 into the Army Reserve. He was mobilized and posted to the Depot on the 8th April 1916. He was aged 26 years and 11 months, worked as a tanners labourer and was living at 118, Laig Gate, Beverley, Yorkshire. with his wife whom he married on the 29th December 1908 at Beverley, Yorkshire. her maiden name was Clubley and at the time of her marriage was living at 120 Laig Gate, Beverley. He was in France on the 13th July 1916 and died of Dropsy and Cardiac Syncope at 14th Corps Rest Station, France.

BRADLEY, Charles. It may be this soldier. Private 4752869, Charles Ernest BRADLEY, 7th, Yorkshire and Lancaster Regiment died 12th April 1845 aged 30. He was the son of Thomas and Alice, and husband of Rose of North Ferriby, Yorkshire. He is buried at Taukkyan War Cemetery, Burma

CARR, Edmund, Flight Lieutenant, Navigator Bomber, 123100, 172 Squadron, Royal Air Force, V.R., died 24th August 1943 aged 22. He was the son of Edmund and Ann Eliza of Newport, Yorkshire. he is buried in St Stephen’s churchyard, Newport, Yorkshire

DAVIS, Arthur, Driver, T/259415, 1004 Docks Operating Company, Royal Engineers, died 14th January 1944 aged 22. He was the son of Arthur and Beatrice Ann of North Cave, Yorkshire. He is buried at Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

FOSTER, Colin. It may be this airman. Leading Airman FAA/FX 77377, (Fleet Air Arm) on H.M.S. Gloucester died 22nd May 1941 aged 23. He was the son of John Bulmer and Alice nee Rudd. He was born in the registration district of Sculcoates, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Lee-On-Solent Memorial, Hampshire

LEAKE, Charles William, Private 3598321, 8th Parachute Regiment died 31st March 1945 aged 26. He is buried in reichswald Forest War cemetery, Nordrhein Westfalen, Germany

ROBINS, Frank Finlay, (Military Cross) Major 14887, East Yorkshire Regiment, died 26th July 1942. He was the husband of Dorothea Veronica of the Croft, North Cave, and son of Frederick Charles Finlay and Charlotte Penelope of Little Pantops, Polzeath, North Cornwall. He is buried in the El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt

SWAIN, Wilfred, Gunner, 1789649, Royal Artillery, died 9th April 1941 aged 35. He was the son of Herbert and Mary Isabel and husband of Jean of Goole, Yorkshire. He is buried in All Saints churchyard, North Cave, Yorkshire
