Summary

Description
English: Combat soldier of the First World War who had suffered extensive Mustard gas burns to his back and arms. These burns are severe enough to be life-threatening. Furthermore, given the characteristics of mustard gas (i.e. the way its vapours penetrate clothing) it is likely that this victim suffered additional burns to his hips, buttocks, thighs and groin area. However, given the social conventions of the era, such injuries would not be photographed for inclusion in a book that was published circa 1918. (Public domain (the photo is over 90 years old))
